Things That Make me go Hmmmm
by: mndsm
You ever had one of those moments, where you wonder to yourself, "who thinks of this stuff?" That happened to me rather recently. I was reading through some messages that I had recieved. The message in question was about a root beer float. Sure they're ultra tasty, and you know you like them, but who thought of it? Ice cream is tasty by itself, as is root beer. But who was the guy that thought of combining the two? What guy was sitting at a table, with a bowl of ice cream, and a nice bottle of IBC, and decided to combine the two? I mean, you're sitting there. Maybe you have chocolate sauce for the ice cream, maybe you don't. Root beer never really needs another factor to make it tasty, it is good on its own. What possesses a man/woman to put the two together? Is it a sense of adventure? Is it the need to define one's life by the things we try? Before you come to a decision, let me submit to you another example-
The Monte Cristo. If you are a sandwich lover like me, you've heard of this creation. It's a ham and turkey sandwich. It has cheddar and swiss cheese. So far so good, right? Then we take said sandwich, and dip it in batter. Once the sandwich is battered, we deep fry it. I can understand the logic behind that, as almost anything is better deep fried. I've never actually had a deep fried anything and thought to myself, "you know, I wonder what this is like without being deep fried." Can't say that it's happened to me. Anyways, back on topic. Last time we left our recipe, it was a deep fried ham, turkey, and cheese sandwich. Now we take this tasty little number, and cover it with powdered sugar. What's that you say? Powdered sugar? Oh yes, it is, and we aren't quite finished. The final ingredient to this artery crusher is a side of raspberry jam. You read that right, raspberry jam. The kind of thing you put on toast, or maybe an english muffin. Only now, we're dipping a deep fried and sugared sandwich in it. Who thought of this? Myself, I was right with it the whole way until we got to the sugar. At that point, you kind of lose me. Raspberry jam is where it about does it with me. I want to meet the person who decided that after deep frying a perfectly good sandwich, decided that they wanted to add sweet to it. Personally, I've never understood the idea of combining with sweet and salty.
How about pickles? You know, the salty, vineagery treat that is as at home on top of a hamburger, as it is on its own? Who thought of pickles? I want to know. I want to know the person that said, ok, we have some cucumbers. I have a load of salt, and some herbs and spices. How about I put them in a jar and see what happens? Doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I'm all about instant gratification, and pickles go against that. A good rule of thumb is, the longer a pickle marinates in the brine, the tastier it is. So by nature, pickles are a time consuming investment at best. I don't have the time to waste making pickles, but I applaud whoever thought of it. I send my congratulations to whatever person decided that waiting 2 months to taste something was a good idea. Thank you Mr. Pickle Man.
Another one of my favorites, that I don't quite understand, is the classic rueben sandwich. Swiss cheese, corned beef, thousand island dressing, and sauerkraut. Only one of these items appeals to me as a standalone. I can chow down on some corned beef with the best of them. The rest, I generally shy away from. You won't catch me putting kraut on my polish sausage at the game. When I go for the dressing on a salad, it's usually ranch. Swiss cheese is something i've never been a fan of in its natural state. One other thing I almost forgot was the bread. Pumpernickel? Rye? Who easts this stuff on its own? Certainly not I. But I tell you, put me in front of a rueben, and you are best served to keep your fingers out of my way, because you're likely to lose one.
Often, I don't think we notice, but there are a lot of interesting combos out there. Things you would never have eaten yet you can't seem to do without when they're combined. For those items, and all the crazy concoctions, I wait, with an empty stomach.
