View Full Version : Winter Meat: Video Game Tourney??
WhiteSpy9

So I have been toying around the idea of a winter games triathlon....
Teams: 2-3 people
Games: Wii Sports Assortment, Rockband, GHIII
Possible to accept a nominal entry fee to award 1st/2nd place with a bit of cash incentives.
Tournament style with bracketing. Your top score vs your opposing teams top score.
Variant: Instead of this being done at someone's place, create strict picture posting guidelines to allow scores be submitted via forums. (All team members must be present in picture, date/time stamps, etc.)
Thoughts??? I think it would be fun considering how cold it is outside.....
Edit-
So far we have several games that people are interested in seeing.
Rockband
Guitar Hero 3
Burnout
Wii-fit/sports/play
Mario Party
Mario Kart (in SOME format)
Goldeneye

I can host Wii sports as well.

I can host GH3 on X360 - Complete with 100" Screen :D Ive been kicking around the idea of picking up Rockband but as of yet haven't pulled the trigger.
BTW Does this in some way involved steak or chicken? ("Winter Meat") or did you mean meet? :)

I have an N64 w/ 4 controller. Golden Eye and Mario Party if we do want to add that in.

Mario Party would be excellent as like the showdown between the final two teams..... set the handicap based on score from the last round of GH or whatever.

Not sure how well using the score from GH for a handicap would work, I would rock the house at GH but I've only played Mario party like twice...but I'm up for whatever, we just need to get this going. Maybe I'll get my place cleaned up a bit and have some people over this weekend for some GH3 if anyone's interested.
We would have to decide on the format for GH3, like best score between two people in co-op, or if we are doing battle against different people, etc. And what difficulty setting we are using.
mndsm
01-23-2008, 10:32 AM
See that works perfect. You get additional starts based on the fact that you'd pwn me at GH, but I can even up the score with Mario Party, since i'll likely be better at that than you.
dmention7
01-23-2008, 10:35 AM
Maybe each game could have a qualifying round or something to judge handicaps
mndsm
01-23-2008, 10:39 AM
Something like that.... I think the idea might be to make sure you have an even team, to do decent in all events, or have a team that pwns all in one event.... as long as we have a way to judge scores fairly.
WhiteSpy9
01-23-2008, 10:40 AM
This is where team member selection is vital......

EXACTLY. I think the idea would be to name the games first, and then follow with the team selection. We could even have a draft lottery if 4 people wanted to set as captains. So say, Jay, Andy, Matt and AJ, set as captains. Everyone else throws names in, and you all draw straws to see what order you get to choose.... that could make things a LOT more interesting.
Picklz
01-23-2008, 10:46 AM
Yeah, I'm thinking maybe have a points system - 1st 2nd 3rd place team in each game gets X points, after all games are played the totals are added up. You would want a well balanced team so you could do alright in all games versus win 1 but loose horribly to all the others.

Let's start a sign-up sheet.
A co-worker's husband (who works for a video game devloper) has an annual office "video game olympics" retreat. Basically it's a long weekend of beer and video games in some big resort cabin, and they have random trophies at the end of the weekend (besides the obvious ones for winning games) for things like most beer drunk, most taco bell consumed.
we should sooooo do that.

We need to make a list of games that we want to include, and then figure out how each will work, like racing is it best of three each of the 2 people on a team drives once, then the tiebreaker they can choose who drives? Or if its 4 player points could be awarded for places 1-4.
We need to get some more organization going rather than OMG THIS GAME and OMG Ill OWNZ Y00z :)
This is IMO:
Guitar Hero III
Goldeneye
Mario Party
Wii Sports

In all reality, if you're going to go to the 64, might as well toss some NES Techmo Bowl in there. I have 3 working NES systems. lol
But yeah, too bad we couldn't keep it all to one system, like the 360.
mndsm
01-23-2008, 04:08 PM
Yeah see, branching systems isn't a bad idea. Some have Wii, some have ps2, some have 360. (Only Joe has a ps3, so he doesn't count). That way, it levels the playing field even more, say a specialist on each system.

My Vote would be for Guitar Hero 3, Wii Sports, Mario Kart, and Goldeneye.
Reasoning:
GH3 Because Its the game a number of people have, and also cross-platform so those with only x360 or Wii can still have played it.
Wii Sports is good fun, and resonably easy to get the hang of.
Mario Kart because, well, its Mario Kart, I'm willing to bet most have played it. For those that havent its a real easy game to pickup and get the hang of without learning proper drifting techniques.
Finally Goldeneye, best FPS Console game ever IMO, its classic, pretty easy and tons of fun.

How about the overall structure? I do like the idea of teams, like the real olympics, because that way, even if someone sucks ass at a game (I've played Goldeneye maybe 4 times evar) the team can be competitive overall.
Once we get the list of games narrowed down (I think 4-5 is a good number), then maybe we can get a list of for-sure participants, and start to figure out how we can set up some evenly-matched teams. Perhaps, each person could rank the games we are using from 1-5 in order of their adeptness at each game. That would give us a start at being able to put teams together. From that point, I say it would be up to the individual team to strategize practices and sub-teams (for coop games), etc.
Another consideration for games: ones that have multiple possible "events" would be a plus. For example, different levels or gameplay styles. One-on-one and coop modes, etc.

If it is an olympic style event, we need some sort of fighting game... *cough* capcom vs snk 2*cough*.
mndsm
01-24-2008, 12:42 PM
Right. Using me as an example- i'd say a 5 @ Wii sports (have you seen me dominate bowling?) a 2 at Goldeneye ( I can't stand that fucking game) 5 at Burnout (I've beaten every Burnout. EVER.) 4-5 @ Mario Party (I can whup ass at strategy, but sometimes lack at mini-games) a 2-3 @ GH, mebbe a 2 since i've never played GH3 for more than 10 minutes. Put the ranks up, set captains, and call it!

one racing, one FPS, WiiSports, GH3 (which i have yet to play btw), and one fighting. One game from each main genre.
but we also need a witness present from one of the other teams to make sure that there is no cheating going on.
