# Story Highlights
# The machine has been called the largest scientific experiment in history
# It straddles the French and Swiss border and is buried 330 feet underground
# Scientists will hunt for signs of invisible "dark matter" and "dark energy"
# The safety of the powerful collider has been debated for years

I read that earlier, wild stuff. 17 miles in diameter.

I think that saying that the safety has been debated is quite generous to the uninformed schmucks who always have to be up in arms about something. It's more like wild speculation regarding incredibly unlikely or impossible events has been thrown around.

The kinds of particles and interactions that are being studied are taking place every second of every day all over the earth... only difference here is that they can be studied and observed in a controlled environment.

Well we all gotta die some day, right?

Mmmmm... High Energy Partical Physics, taste...

I agree with dmention7. The only ones worried about this are people who know nothing about physics.

I have been watching this project for a while now. Very interesting stuff. As for being worried who cares it is on the french and swiss border. The French will just giveup and the Swiss will not get involved (pussys).

lol Nate...

Also, even if it did trigger some kind of cataclysmic event of the kind they describe, the entire planet would be winked out of existence before we even had a chance to realize what was happening. In which case... nobody would be left to care, so I don't see what the big deal is.

One of the things the nutjobs think could happen is the creation of a black hole... if that were to happen, it wouldn't probably happen "in a wink". The theory of Gravitational Time Dilation means that near a black hole, time would slow down relative to farther away from it... pretty much meaning the planet would, in theory, slowly get sucked into it.

In other words, we riot, loot, and pillage?

Actually, I'm partially incorrect there... regardless of how fast the planet got sucked up, it would seem significantly slower the closer one was to the blackhole... and since the blackhole would be on the planet it would be slow for everyone on earth.
