Anyone interested in a Biggest loser contest? Not sure how to do it but we could have everyone throw in $5 or $10 and do a 1st and 2nd place for who ever loses the most. Anyone have any ideas or thoughts??

Only if the goal is to loose everything, like house/apartment, car, life savings, and maybe go to jail? That'd be an interesting take on the concept... Take the term "loser" and actually have people try to be losers!
... is that funny or is it just me...?

Well would it be based on a percentage lost or just the amount of weight? And how long would it go for?

id say we calculate the amount of body fat we have and then the winner would be the one who has lost the biggest % of body fat

Body fat is very difficult to calculate accurately, so that would be my concern with that.
Otherwise, I would suggest we wait until after the fair to start the formal contest so we can get one last hurrah in.

oh yeah id say every chips in between $20-$50 so that its also a bigger motivator to shed those lbs

The one thing I worry about is consistency in scales. We'd have to have everyone weigh in on the exact same scale at the same time. Those buggers are so finicky it's insane.

Very true Tom. We would need a central place, a day, and time that all people involved could go. That might get tricky. Although, we could possible do the start and finish on the same scale and the inbetweens just at home or whatever.

yeah i say we do september the biggest looser month, and everyweek we weight in and the person who looses the most by the last day of september wins. but see if we go by lbs, people who are bigger loose a little more than people who are slightly thiner, and also the biggest looser would be about getting healthier so if a person starts gaining muscle, that weights more than fat, so thats why i liked the % of body fat, over who looses more lbs
p.s. we could do the wednesday meets the weight ins

Jess, that makes a lot of sense. While scales are generally excellent for consistency and relative weighing (which is good to tell how much you gain or lose), they do have variability. I think having a common beginning/end scale and just using your home one in between is a good mix of ease and fairness.
I think % of weight is a good compromise between our disparity and being able to get viable results. While % of body fat would account as well for muscle gain, it is difficult to perform accurately.
I would also be for keeping the money aspect smaller. $20 is a lot for some people to use in this purpose. I think $10 would be better.

I like the % of weight. People like myself and James would be at a decided advantage if we went by sheer lbs, simply because we're starting out with a great amt to lose than say.... Jess.

So we should start in sept. Do a % of weight and have weekly weigh ins at Porkys. Entrance fee $10. Does this sound good to everyone?
I like the idea...and could use some motivation (other than AJ) myself.
BTW, I don't really think this belongs in the Events section...imo.

It does. But I probably won't go to Porky's every week. Just start and finish most likely. So we would start Sept. 3rd?

Shoot I have class every Wed... Jana move it where you think it should go..I am not so good with the organization of things. But yeah Sept 3rd sounds good.

Moved to the on-topic section for the time being. And I would be in as well. Hell, even if there wasn't money involved, i could use the motivation of a contest! I think the hardest part of stuff like this is making the initial changes in your life, so having a month of hardcore weight loss would hopefully be a good way to set in some long-term habits and help one realize they can, in fact, live without that second buff chick sam! lol

Jeez, you have to start the contest AFTER I lose 25 pounds?
And yes, the lifestyle change is the hardest part.

You might consider not having the first one if you really want to loose :)

Nice, count me in on this one as well :)
grrrr, I've lost 15lbs in the last 2 months, and now losing is harder. But I want to drop another 10-15 before I try to pack on more muscle. Depending on how all this throws down I'm in.

I know currently I haven't dropped much in weight (down to 188 from about 196 from the beginning of the year), but I have picked up muscle mass and lost fat mass. I believe that is the purpose of this one.
Fortunally I have a scale that gives me body mass, % of muscle mass, and pretty accurate weight.

Being "competitive"? Like inviting everyone out to a place and buying them the fattiest foods and making them stay out late (then not doing so yourself)to help you win?:boxing:

Well I think this is a great idea. And i would love to be part of it one i don't have that much to lose and to i already pay once a week at weightwatchers i can't afford to be putting down that kind of money. I don't need some more motivation from someone other than myself and leader at WW.

Can you make this a biggest gainer contest?? cuz losing a lot of weight that fast is not good for you at all. Plus we need to base this on body mass not lbs lost. Or it will be just as big of a sham as the show was.

I don't think anyone is endorsing extreme measures or anything... I mean, we're just talking about putting a bit of competitive spirit to good use.

Agreed, Jay. The idea is to use a little competition to get people on the wagon and keeping them on the wagon for a month at least (and hopefully those of us with more to lose can work together to stay on the wagon longer). I lost 20 pounds once doing this, but then fell off, and this is giving me the incentive to hop back on again.

I know that I will not lose all the weight I want to in a month, but it will get me back into the lifestyle choices that I need to re-commit myself to. I probably won't win since I already lost half of the weight I wanted to in the spring but I need the motivation again...a little competition will do the trick. If someone loses weight at a healthy pace, two pounds a week or so it great. I expect to lose 8 to 10 pounds in that month. I am very happy with that so we will see what happens!!

I agree with you we could extend it to two months or even longer. And if someone knows how to base it on body mass then lets go for it. I am not that smrt.

Last spring when I changed my "lifestyle", I lost weight at a healthy pace and lost about 20 pounds in three months time. Maybe we should do it for two or three months, there might be more results for everyone.

Ok, so Taya had been thinking of ten bucks a person and making a winner based on percentage lost. So, I am hearing that we are not paying and will just keep track? Are we going to put a limit on it...like 8 weeks or 12 or something?
