By popular request, I am posting up the camping info that was started on mazda3forums.com and opened up to mnmazda.com. The website for the thread is: http://www.mazda3forums.com/index.php?topic=71292.0
Feel free to check it out and ask questions as needed.
Ok, here are the few activities that are going on in Duluth the weekend on July 13th through 15th.
*Summer Clearance Sidewalk Sale at the Miller Mall
For the shoppers in us Smile
*Fitger's Sidewalk Festival, Fitger's Brewery Complex
http://www.fitgers.com/
*Second Annual Bayfront Reggae Festival, Bayfront Festival Park
http://www.reggaefestivalguide.com/festivals/july.shtml
http://www.bayfrontreggae.com/home.html
Ok, here are the details for those of you that might be checking this out from MNMazda.com, everyone is welcome to come and once it gets closer, if you could let me know how many if you are planning on staying at the campground, I will make sure we have enough space.
Here is all that you need to know, please pass the word and DON'T FORGET the plans. Take work off now, so the fun can be had by all.
Here is the link for the map of the campground:
http://www.indianpointcampground.com/grounds_map.html
I have reserved campsites 55 through 58. Three of them have electric for lights and music!! Kick Ass. The man, Will Munger, was very pleasant and knows that we will be a big group and thought it would be the biggest, most private, and best (since it is on the water) spot for us to be. Now, the tent site is $21 per night with a $10 charge for each extra tent. The electric sites are $25 per night with a $10 charge per extra tent as well. He did say that we could fit up to three tents per site, if we wanted to. So, even though I have reserved four sites, which could ultimately hold three tents at four people per tent, that could be 12 per site...but I think that would get crowded. I say we do two four + people tents per site or three two people tents. Is this making sense?
He also said we might be able to fit two cars per site for parking. If there isn't room, we can park near the entrance. The reservations can only be for two nights, not one. So please, please, please try to be available for both nights of FUN! I can call him at any time to change the number of sites we may need within the next couple months.
**Now for the hotel goers...the Munger Inn is on the property as well and he said that for a room with 2 queen beds, each night would be $89.95 for two people, if you add two more people, it would normally be $105.95 but he will let four people stay for the price of 2 if you mention that you are with this group. You could say the Mazda group but it is reserved under my last name and he thinks you should say that. Now of course, if you plan on going and staying at the Inn, you should make your reservations within the next month or so, would be my guess. Just PM me if you need my last name. And, if you stay in the hotel...you get complimentary BIKES! for the trails...another Kick Ass!
So, this is the plan. This is for Friday, July 13th through Sunday, July 15th. Any questions, just HOLLA, and let's get pumped up.

Hot Ice
05-07-2007, 11:30 AM
I know for me, I will have class until 4:10 that day unless I skip it and leave after my morning class to be there in the early afternoon. I can't remember what time the guy said we could get there but I am thinking anytime on Friday after noon.
JustROLLIN
05-07-2007, 11:32 AM
Yeah, cause I can always take a half day or something. Any idea what people on M3F.com said? I cant see that site while I am at work.
Hot Ice
05-07-2007, 11:36 AM
They haven't stated what time they were heading out. I also am not aware of who is planning on going for the whole weekend or just one night. I am thinking most people are going to make a weekend out of it. I do think that all of the m3f.com people that have signed up to go...are on this site as well, so we will be hearing from them I am sure. I am always up for half days so I can ... I just remembered that will be second session and I will only have a morning class so I will be able to be there early!
JustROLLIN

What do people think about meeting up in Forest Lake, for example, in order to caravan up to the camping site??
JustROLLIN
05-07-2007, 12:09 PM
I dont mind meeting in Forest Lake if we can do it a little earlier in the day. I live in the SW metro and trying to get to Forest Lake during rush hour does not excite me. If some people want to head up at say 1-3pm I would be down.

So it is looking like we have 13, that isn't enough for more than two sites yet. (and 2 are hoteling it so 11 really) We have four reserved, all on the water, with our own space and privacy. Anyone else jumping on the bandwagon yet? DrWebster? How about you and your bride?? Out of 90 + members, there should be more. SpeedAddict? How about you? You can sleep in my tent with my friend and I. We can make it the "Ladies Tent".

I'm picking up some bias in that poll Jay, what’s with the question mark on the more space part? Each site near the woods has at least twice if not three times as much space as the lake view ones have, not to mention its isolated from almost all the other sites, so we can be loud as hell, if we want.
Hot Ice
06-01-2007, 01:54 PM
Well I have a message into the people from yesterday and I am still waiting to hear back, I will try them again today to see if the other sites are even still available. We may be able to end this war once and for all...

waaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh! :fish'D:
I put a question mark because I didn't know whether the map was accurate or not, and due to the fact that it sounds like the lots are big enough that space probably won't be an issue either way.
btw, I changed the poll...

Joe, my thought was that we'd meet up in Forest Lake, for example, sometime early afternoon that friday. I vote Forest Lake, since we're all going to drive right past it anyways, and we can pick up any last-minute supplies we'll need for the trip.

We were discussing so. If you mean for that day, yeah, if you mean for camping, we were thinking about it but more along the lines of who should bring what and probably who wants to bunk with who and that kind of stuff. And Jay thought of it as a "practice" caravan, but Jurgen wants to catch a ride, so it might just be a gathering of sorts. We kind of have been chatting about it on m3f.com so check it out if you want...

Finalize plans...well, you city folks should meet up on Friday early afternoonish in Forest Lake to caravan up to D-town with Jay. The rest of us will just be there when we can. I will be getting there somewhat early on Friday as well. As far as supplies, I would say bring what you really need and then we can share from there. If we want, we can list what we are bringing. I know that I will have a cook stove, small grill, a chair or more, a tent, some bedding, some cooking forks for the fire, some plastic ware, plates, paper towels, cups, lanterns, bug spray, towels, coolers with food and alcohol, bottle and can coolers, sunscreen, grilling tools, playing cards, possibly some fishing stuff, table cloths, that is what I can think of for the moment. How would anyone like to go about planning this? Any ideas? I keep asking but haven't really gotten any responses. It is sooooooooooooooooooooooooo close!! Yippee!

I will add you to the list, how many are coming? We do have room and we might have too much room and might give up a site once we are there if we don't need it. That way it is a bit cheaper for us all! :) It is still way cheap anyway.

I'm thinking maybe the way to go for the small stuff, is if everyone brings what they think they'll need. If we end up seriously lacking in any supplies, we can make a quick run to the supermarket or target or whatever. Might be the way to go for grub as well. That way there's less to carry up in coolers etc.
As for the bigger stuff... I can bring a little propane grille.

Joe, do you know if you'll have a firmer estimate of when you can meet up, as the date gets closer? I really can't see us leaving earlier than noon anyways, so it probably wouldn't be that big of a deal to leave around 2-3pm if that's when you and Jurgen could make it.
I mean, we could always get some tasty BBQ at famous daves, or shop for last minute supplies if we have to wait for a few minutes.
So... walkie talkies. Are these things generally universally compatible, or do certain brands/models only work with each other? I'm thinking about picking up a cheap pair.
JustROLLIN
06-29-2007, 11:00 AM

Yea Joe, I'd being willing to wait a little to go up in a caravan.
I can bring a small supply of wood along, but the wood up there at the camp ground and the near by gas station is over priced. Maybe we should pool some loot before hand and find a large hunk of wood to buy down here. I'll do some looking, I'd rather not pay out the nose up there. I don't think we could bring to much wood, every time I'm up there, we've always run out of wood, no matter how much we bring.

Most radios sold nowadays are FRS radios. They will all work with each other as long as the packaging says something about FRS. The other less popular option is GMRS which technically requires a FCC license to operate.
I will be using my ham radio (Yaesu VX-5R) which has been modded to transmit on FRS frequencies :)

Even if the wood is overpriced, it might be worth it to not have to haul it all the way to duluth and get your trunk all dirty. We can toast marshmallows over the cookstove if we have to... lol
So how do we want to do food? Would it be easiest to make a grocery run once we get into town, rather than trying to evenly split up food duties?
JustROLLIN

Wood - I dont mind paying a little extra to avoid the hassle of hauling.
Food - I think it would be best to run into town up there as well. Once we have everyone together we can get a better idea of what people want and collect some money. Those who dont have tents can head in while other setup?

Ok, good. Wood, paying there for it. Food, making a run while there. Let's just say to bring cash. I am thinking we will be getting rid of one of the sites as well. I think we can have three tents per site without being charged extra. I think three sites will be plenty. I will bring a couple decent size coolers and a couple little ones. We also could make a run for whatever else we need Friday evening once everyone is there.

As for walkies, I would suggest we pick a channel ahead of time that we can use. I suggest something higher in the spectrum as most radios hasve 14 channels and typically the lower channels are used more. I also think either 9 or 11 is an "emergency" channel, so lets stay away from that.

Famous Dave's will be the best spot for you all to meet up at. The other places are getting off the freeway a little too much unless you did the Holiday gas station right off of the freeway to the right. It gets to be so congested there in Forest Lake. Yea, don't blame you Joe, can get messy, but the hatch with the rubber mat were made for jobs like that. Plus good to have a mix of wood. Stuff up there burns like kindelling, stuff I got is very large and burns slow and not so hot.

I am bringing a sweet set up with a gas stove and a gas grill, on the smaller side for both. I can cook with gas if Joe is scared. ;) I am also bringing two to three good size coolers and one or two little ones. I am not talking about the safety factor. I am talking about flavor of something cooked over charcoal versus a gas grill. When I am in the cities and dont have lots of time, I use gas. But, when I am camping or grilling on a holiday for example, charcoal cannot be beat.

Joe, wtf man.... You want to drink cheap flavorless lite beer, but now you're suggesting we grill with charcoal because it tastes better? lol....
And yes, I think the final verdict is that we're meeting for one big caravan in the Forest Lake Famous Dave's parking lot at 2. Anyone have issues with that?

The address is: the west side of 35W, at the forest lake exit. Look for a bunch of car dealerships on the left side of the road, exit, turn left, turn left, you're there.

Twisties with a loaded car? You’re crazy! But did some looking, 210 (the exit by the casino that's near Duluth) goes through Jay Cook State Park, and looks to be fairly fun, then it jets north and meets up with the road our camp site is on. There is also Skyline Parkway which traverses the hill above Duluth, and has some nice turns and beautiful photo ops. I think I'll wait till I unload my car before hitting those roads up.
JustROLLIN
07-12-2007, 01:38 PM
Yeah, I was gonna ask about some photo op spots. I definitely vote for something down in the harbor and something up on the bluffs. I think both would make for a pretty cool shot.

A little north of Hinckley I think its an exit at Aksov/Finlayson Hwy 23... That supposedly leads to Duluth.
When we're in Duluth we should be looking for Skyline Drive, 30 mile road, 600 ft above shoreline. Described as having winding roads, rock canyons, and sharp curves :D.
Also- if we head northeast out of Duluth there's the north shore drive that's fun.

I used to live in the area and 23 is a great road. You guys would enjoy yourselves coming up or going home on that road. The car is almost packed. Now I have to wash it up a couple times. I am sure it won't be super shiny by the time tomorrow comes but I need to get it cleaned up!
