Do they make camber bolts for the 3 or is there a generic type that fits all/most cars?
I'm leaning towards bolts over camber plates after installing a couple sets of both on friends cars.

Any pics of the "camber bolts" you're talking about? The 3 uses camber LINKS that have a bolt used to adjust the camber. Ebay has them a lot, and people sell them on forums quite a bit too...usually around $150-180 a pair for the rear.

they are also sold at www.therpmstore.com for the rear, but I see no front camber kit.

They're called camber bolts or I've heard them called crash bolts, they allow you to adjust the camber. I have installed camber plates on some friends WRX and NX and they didn't like them so we switched them out for crash bolts. From my searching it doesn't look like they make them for the 3, strange.
Here's a link where they talk about them for Subaru's.
