So for Saturday if we're destroying RC cars I'm going to need to find the smallest damn hex key to get the gear off of my old motor so I can put my new super motor in....

dmention7
07-19-2007, 01:37 PM
I've got a whole toolbox full of small tools and supplies for my car. I'll bring it with if you need.

mazdamn02
07-19-2007, 01:45 PM
sweetness. mine is sitting on my floor disassembled heckling me each time i walk by.

mndsm

Josh, I have the hex key you need. You should have gotten a new one with the gear you need to attach to the motor to make it work right. In any event, I have what you need.

mazdamn02
07-19-2007, 02:38 PM
Hmmm.... damn. How's your assembly going? If you can bring that key with on Saturday I'd appreciate it!

I think I spent a good 5 days building mine (I was pretty anal about getting every single part completely deburred and sanded though). And then another couple of days doing a two-tone paintjob on the body, which I thought turned out nicely.

I'm so not patient enough to do that...

See, I love putting shit together. I enjoyed building the damn thing as much as I enjoy driving it

Car was together Wednesday night, and took its first run. Had to screw with the steering servo to get it straight, ended up taking it out of the car and adjusting it 3 different times. Now we be rockin. Body is cut, but needs edges cleaned and paint. No idea what color i'm going to run, so it's clear. I do need a hole reamer to fix the pin holes in the body. (I exacto'd them and they're good, but not perfect.) I may need to re-do my left rear shock, I think it's leaking. Those cheesy little o-rings suck. Other then that, it's just cleaning some glue overspray on the wheels and setting the shocks so i'm not dragging the motor on hard acceleration, and we are golden. Also, I finally found a site that shows what the hell 19-turn vs. 11-turn and what stock vs. modified vs. double modified means. Turns out that i'm running a 19-turn double modified. Which=fast, and really damn loud. This thing screams. So yeah, i'm ready to rock.

dmention7
07-20-2007, 10:43 AM
Scha-weet!

And I've got a body reamer (boy, does that sound dirty...), so you can use that to clean up your holes if you want (that also sounds dirty...)

mndsm
07-20-2007, 11:37 AM
Wicked nice. Now if I could only decide on a paint scheme.....

(If you didn't already know, it's seeming like it's going to be hideously complicated)

dmention7
07-20-2007, 11:49 AM
I wouldn't expect anything less than hideously complicated. That paint-on masking stuff is a godsend though. Slather the shit on, then cut and peel away the areas to be painted and you're golden.

Link to site? I know mines at least a 14 turn modified.... Let the races begin :KANE:

Josh, did you make sure your speed controller can handle a 14-turn motor? A lot of the entry level units can only handle an 18-turn motor without burning up...

You got some of that? I'd be interested in it if you do. Otherwise the hobby man is going to love me. I already need to start looking at paint colors, I need at least 4 right now, probably 6 by the time we are done, and maybe more.

Thanks for the link Tom. Jay I picked up a speed controller that will handle it. Not entry level by any means :bling:

dmention7
07-20-2007, 12:01 PM
I've got some, but I can't guarantee what shape it's in. I'll see if it's any good tonight. As I recall, the stuff smelled a bit like rancid orange juice.... lol

Nice. I'm thinking about upgrading to a brushless system, but for now I've just got a basic speed controller and a 18-turn modified motor.

mazdamn02
07-20-2007, 12:10 PM
Brushless speed controllers are pretty pricey from what I've seen...

dmention7

Indeed they are. Which is why I'm just thinking about it.... lol

not much personally though... I think I just plugged mine in and ran it without being connected to the transmission for a few minutes.

mndsm
07-20-2007, 12:36 PM
Ah yes, brushless. 5 turn touring car motors. 70mph electric. Also more than the total cost of my car for one of those and a forward only ESC. Yikes.

mazdamn02
07-20-2007, 12:39 PM
The ESC that I replaced was probably top of the line when it was bought, and only forward.... Too bad its not fast enough, lol. Got my new wheels and tires on. Its gonna be bad ass.

dmention7
07-20-2007, 12:40 PM
I needs me some new tires. I think I'm going to get the same set that I ruined before with poor gluing. For now, the white dish wheels and generic dirt tires will have to do!

mndsm
07-20-2007, 12:47 PM
Yeah, I wanna get some muddin tires and a set of road slicks. Black wheels, no question.

dmention7
07-20-2007, 12:48 PM
Hmm, that reminds me, I never did finish dialing in a good suspension setup for pavement.

mazdamn02
07-20-2007, 12:59 PM
My new wheels are yellow. I tried to get black but they only had the right set for rear and not front.

Has anyone gone outside yet today? Its f*in beautiful and we're all stuck at work.

dmention7
07-20-2007, 01:03 PM
No, I haven't been outside, and I'm trying not to look, because I don't want to depress myself!

Yeah, I wanna get some muddin tires and a set of road slicks. Black wheels, no question.

Tom, do you recall if the T4 has 1/4" or 3/16" rear axles? I seem to be getting conflicting info...

I like smoke and lunch breaks. Drove to Subway with the windows down. Made me happy on the inside.

It looks as if the catalog says they are 3/16ths.

This is a thread to discuss RC cars and the like, and to keep some of the more tech part of the convo out of the chat thread, where it will be buried in the next few days. Feel free to join in, we always want more racin!

dmention7
07-20-2007, 01:52 PM
Good call on the separate thread.

I saw the thread show up, and I was thinking "WTF?? Tom and Josh managed to post two pages about RC cars while I was at lunch???"

mndsm
07-20-2007, 01:55 PM
Nah, I just swapped it out. I figure this is something that could actually be useful to someone else on here that might be looking for a hobby. My biggest problem with RC and the reason I never did it before is the lack of people around me that were interested. Now that I know you and Josh are both into it, it was safe for me to do it. Cause there's only so many times you can whip donuts in your parking lot/crash into the plants before it gets old.

dmention7
07-20-2007, 01:57 PM
Cause there's only so many times you can whip donuts in your parking lot/crash into the plants before it gets old.

That's exactly why I parked my truck for a year or so.

mndsm
07-20-2007, 02:04 PM
But now, there are three of us. And places to take them. Plus you do have something of a back yard, and I imagine that we can convince Josh to build something in his parents back yard. I saw it and it's good sized. Also, there is the option of building some sort of cheapish jumps and crap we can take and set up places. And I imagine we could convince at least one more person on here to throw their name in the pot for some good times.

dmention7
07-20-2007, 02:08 PM
We need to find a good dirt BMX track, or a big construction site. I s'pose we can always get them tweaked for pavement racing and hit up a big parking lot.

mndsm
07-20-2007, 02:21 PM
I had a sekrit idea. Tomorrow we shall investigate. I think it's going to work, and if it does, it will be double kickass.

dmention7
07-20-2007, 02:31 PM
subbin!

mndsm
07-20-2007, 02:43 PM
So what time do we wanna meet? I'll be done with work @ Noon, possibly earlier.... and this place I have in mind is closest to Josh's apt. Do we want to meet there or somewheres else?

AJ
07-20-2007, 02:47 PM
I've got an RC question for some of your guys. I've had a few in the past. Both electric and nitro powered. One thing I always see killing my desire is the lack of places to really let loose and have some fun, and the lack of control I end up having. By that I mean I alwasy end up losing signal to the fuck'n car in some form or another and the car goes haywire. I've had them end up hitting parked cars as a only means of stopping them. I'd get back into them again if there was something I am doing wrong that I could fix easily.

dmention7
07-20-2007, 02:54 PM
I know you can get cutouts for nitro cars that will kill fuel and apply full brakes if the signal is lost. And I'm pretty sure that electric cars should coast to a stop once signal is lost, especially if you have an electronic speed controller.

Otherwise, charge the damn batteries in your radio before you head out!

mndsm
07-20-2007, 02:56 PM
The better radio you have, the better the signal is. Most of the time when you get an electric car out of range, they die on their own..... Nitro is another story. Power lines will kick the signals ASS as well as other types of AM transmission. I'd say, find a more open area. I have a genius idea that might work out kickass...... plus there is a solid hobby shop where I got my rig that could probably tell us a good spot to go throw down.

I suppose the biggest thing you have to remember is that the signal is very low watt, so it does not travel far. I haven't tested it yet, but I imagine mine craps out @ about 200 feet.

07-20-2007, 03:17 PM
I had an RC when I was still a seed. A local skating rink would hold races/tournaments there on weekends. aaaahhh.... memories...

mazdamn02
07-20-2007, 03:28 PM
We can use my place as a rally point. Plus its close to RC Car kings, lol.

mndsm
07-20-2007, 04:10 PM
Yeah, the last thing I need is to drop more cash in there. Although, I am thinking I needs wheels, and I did find some I really like......

dmention7
07-20-2007, 04:15 PM
I just ordered a set of blingy wheels and some street tires :D

I'll stick with dishes and studded tires for off-road.

mndsm
07-20-2007, 04:24 PM
You suck. I'ma wait on ordering wheels and tires for now. I kinda really wanna go brushless ASAP.

MazdaMINI
07-20-2007, 04:38 PM
your ordering wheels tom?? my goodness this is an expensive hobby.... but I guess it keeps you guys out of getting into trouble with your big boy cars.. can cause less damage with the little ones.

mndsm
07-20-2007, 04:47 PM
Wheels are cheap. The ones I want aren't even 20$.

dmention7
07-20-2007, 04:47 PM
Yeah, I got 4 wheels and 4 tires shipped for about $50

mndsm
07-20-2007, 05:21 PM
Who'd you go through, what did you get? Kinda wondering what else might be out there.

mazdamn02
07-20-2007, 05:52 PM
I spent $30 for wheels and tires. They're totally gonna kick ass on pavement...

dmention7
07-20-2007, 06:04 PM
I got mine from towerhobbies.com

RPM makes some kickass wheels, and Proline makes a pretty good selection of tires as well.

dmention7
07-20-2007, 11:03 PM
Rebuilt my shocks tonight with some heavier shock oil--getting ready for the insane jumps I know Tom's cooking up for us....

Also found out that one of the mounts for my steering servo was hacked--must've been one of those nasty crashes last weekend. Hopefully superglue will keep it in place till I can get a replacement.

DrWebster
07-20-2007, 11:29 PM
So what's going down Saturday? I'm totally lost. I thought we were gonna eat ribs at Jay's house.

dmention7
07-20-2007, 11:34 PM
I don't know what's going down... I have those ribs all ready to go, but I guess we never really firmed up whether it was saturday or sunday.

Sounds like Josh has to be out by 5 or 6, and if we're meeting up for RC action at Tom's, well, that's all the way across town from my place.

Maybe I could huck the ribs down to Tom's to grille up for lunch, followed by RC madness? Do it on 2 separate days? It's all good to me!

mndsm
07-21-2007, 08:00 AM
My house is still in destroyed mode from not being around, so i'm not entirely sure that coming here is the best idea. I think Josh said something about meeting at his place, since it's the closest for the super sekrit idea I have. As for servo mounts, I have some plastic ones and a bunch of spacers if you want to try and use those, or the hobby shop is literally a mile from Josh's place. But if you have a prior commitment to ribs, we can always do this another day. Either today or tomorrow, Taya and I had planned on going to Car Craft. Maybe ribs and Car Craft tomorrow?

micahlarson
07-21-2007, 10:16 AM

mazdamn02
07-21-2007, 10:27 AM
I'm awake, and in need of vitamin water! J/k....

Anyways we can rip it up at my place its actually kind of clean for some reason. I have my super grill if Jay wanted to sacrifice his ribs, or we could cook something else on that if people are hungry, cub is a mile away from my place too. So... Meet at my place? Micah you're welcome to join if you want to venture down to Burnsville?

dmention7
07-21-2007, 10:28 AM
Hmmm..... too much organizing trouble. We've been talking about this RC thing for awhile, so lets do that today. I'll toss the ribs in the freezer, and we'll make that happen next weekend. Any objections?

EDIT: You beat me to the post, Josh!

mazdamn02
07-21-2007, 10:30 AM
Haha you got post pwned. I'm going to PM my address to you guys. I'm ready to rock in as soon as 1 hour.

dmention7
07-21-2007, 10:33 AM
Nice! I'll probably be able to get there between 11-12

mazdamn02
07-21-2007, 10:36 AM
I'm going to go make coffee and attempt to break in my motor. I have no idea how to actually mount it since my roomate took it apart. Damn engineers. Being all smart and stuff.
My place should actually be pretty good to meet up for this, since I'm on the ground level we can do testing right out side my apartment and there's alot of grass and road around.

mndsm
07-21-2007, 11:08 AM
I'll remember to bring that hex head so you can pwn your pinion gear. Jay if you want those servo mounts let me know. I got dope aluminum ones with the kit so the plastic ones are just going to sit there. As for tomorrow..... we will figure that out later. I'm assuming that y'all want to go to el car show.

Also, i'll be there at like noon/noon-thirty

dmention7
07-21-2007, 11:17 AM
Tom, it's actually one of the mounts on the servo itself that broke--part of the servo's case.

It's okay, I've been meaning to buy one with a bit quicker response for awhile.

I might be down for the car show... I don't know if Nanami had plans for us or not, but I'll figure it out. Colin, what're you up to tomorrow? Maybe we can hit those ribs for lunch or dinner tomorrow... otherwise I'll probably toss em in the freezer and we can do that next weekend.

Josh, I've seen that gif in your sig a millions times, but I still make time at least once a day to sit and watch it all the way through!! My favorite part is him pounding his arms into little stumps... LOL

mazdamn02
07-21-2007, 12:10 PM
The sad part is I watch it all the time too.... and its my own sig!

I can't believe it... I thought I found the right hex key to take of my motor's gear and I was walking around on the phone and set it down some where now I can't find it. I am the biggest idiot I know!

edit: Jay quit posting and set the boost to 15 psi and come over and lets start this madness!

I had no idea there were guys on here that were into R/C. I've been racing since I was 12 (roughly 20 years), and currently race at an off-road track down in Hampton. If any of you guys are interested in trying out some racing on a groomed dirt track, we run on Sundays at noon. The track's website is www.thercbarn.com, or you can come check out www.rchobbyhub.com, where I'm a moderator on the site. We've got a bunch of great guys on the site that are always willing to help out with setups, tips, etc.

My current race truck is an XTM X-Cellerator with a Novak GTB brushless esc powering an SS5800 motor with a sintered rotor.

dmention7
07-21-2007, 09:48 PM
I don't know about racing (we're a bunch of half-asses when it comes to stuff like this....) but if you could give us some leads on good places to go bash around, that'd be super! :D

Oh, and btw guys, I think I may have found a nice place to do some bashing near my place. Some road work that hasn't been touched in awhile--lots of hills and piles of dirt, and a park with a big paved lot right across the street.

That's kickass that you're about the RC. Glad to have a guy that knows something about it, since we all just kinda decided we wanted to do RC one weekend.

And Colin, I say get the T4 RS RTR. Great starting point. If I can I am going to go stupid fast and get brushless soon, so I MAY be interested in selling my spare motor and ESC... since I have to get all new stuff if I want to go brushless. We shall have to see though, maybe I can sell some crap and get there.

dmention7
07-22-2007, 06:53 PM
Tom and I both have Associated T4 trucks, and Josh has a B4 (B3??) buggy.

Josh just picked up a 14-turn motor, and that thing is crazy fast. Tom and I are running slightly more sedate 19-turn modified motors, but Tom's truck has got some serious snap to it!

mazdamn02
07-23-2007, 10:13 AM
RTR the way to be if you don't want to sink 5 large bills in to it.
(you'll spend that much anyways, but you won't have to to get running...)

Oh ya... Tom the RC helicopter kicks ass. I took it to work and slapped a few work logos on it so I have a legit reason to keep it around here.
Can't wait for my lunch break....

mndsm
07-23-2007, 10:36 AM
Does it work good? Is it something worth looking into?

mazdamn02
07-23-2007, 10:45 AM
Its pretty uncontrollable, longest I've had it in the air is like 30 seconds. Its always drifting in some direction...
Once I get bored with this I see myself getting something better. Its too much fun.

mndsm
07-23-2007, 10:47 AM
Dude RC copter are teh scary. I am afraid of those things. But you can do some hellafied stunts if you get one working right.

mndsm
07-23-2007, 12:37 PM
Colin, it appears that you should go with the XTM X-cellerator. GYG (who appears to be the local RC guru) is running one, and it seems like he is pretty much kicking ass with it, and it's at least 100$ cheaper than trying to get into a T4 or comparable Losi truck. Plus, as I read the review/posts on the RC forum, seems as if a lot of parts will swap out, so you can upgrade and run some wicked parts from all over the map on it.

GYG
07-23-2007, 12:53 PM
The XTM has proven to be a great truck! I've always been one to run something different that what other guys use, so I took a chance on the X-Cellerator a year or so ago, and it worked out great (Infact, I just won the mod truck class yesterday with the XTM at "The Barn" track in Hampton). Lots of parts interchange (Losi wheels, T4/B4 gears, XX-T front arms, etc).

One downside is that the esc that comes with the XTM only handles motors that are 20 turns or more, so you'd have to upgrade the esc if you want to get a hotter modified motor. Oh, and none of the local shops carry parts, so you gotta order everything online thru www.hobbypeople.net.

MazdaMN02, what kind of heli do you have? Heli's are a load of fun, but are very expensive when you crash. A buddy of mine that is currently in Iraq that I fly with comes home in August, so we'll be firing up the heli's again soon. He's got a blinged out T-Rex, and it sounds like I'll be buying his backup 'Rex when he gets back, as I'm currently heli-less.

You guys should check out www.rcflightsim.com. I use this sim, along with a USB controller I picked up on eBay for $20. Works great, costs a LOT less than the other sims out there, will help with flight orientation, and make learning a lot faster.

MazdaMN02, what kind of heli do you have? Heli's are a load of fun, but are very expensive when you crash. That's cool...my nephew has one of those too. Flys pretty good actually! Some of the more inexpensive helis/planes are a blast to fly. I've got one of the Picco-Z heli's from Radio Shack, and fly it around the house a lot. For $30, it's a blast! I think they sell them in Target now too, but I'm not sure.

Here's what the track website says about practicing...

Practice at the barn

I thought about this last night and made an executive decision.

If you race or make purchases at the barns hobby shop, the practice is free. Well sort of you may have to occaisionaly push a broom, rake, shovel, or sprinkler.

Practice days at this point would be Weds, Thurs, Friday. If for some reason I'm not here make yourself at home. There is a outside electrical outlet on the North end of the building.

As always practice on race days is limited to racers signed up for the days festivities.

Are your T4's ready to runs, or kits? If you have the kit version of the truck (either the Team or Factory Team), then the tires that came with the trucks (should be Holeshot rears and Edge fronts) will work great on the track. That's what most are running on race day. The RTR truck tires might be ok too, but usually the rubber is harder on the RTR's to make them last longer on the street and for bashing.

dmention7
07-25-2007, 11:26 AM

No, you can run whatever you want. Just thought I'd suggest a tire combo that works on the track whether it's wet or dry, and that most likely came with your trucks. :-)

The only time I go there is when they have something I want that none of the other shops have in stock, which is about once every 6 months.

Sky Hobbies is very close to Hub in Richfield (Sky Hobbies was formerly known as Hobby Warehouse), and they have much better prices...they carry more plane/heli stuff than car stuff, but still have a decent selection of tires, wheels, parts, etc (probably just as big as Hub.

Richfield. I work in Edina, I just have to take France to 66th, and run over to Penn.

I also agree, Hub is hideously expensive. I prefer RC Car Kings in Burnsville, but they are close on Sundays, so when I need stuff, I have to go to Hub. And when I f00k a set of bearings in my left front wheel and want to rebuild it at work, I have to go to Hub. Sometimes you gotta pay the price. Take a look at a Blade CX2...the counter rotating 4-channel heli's are MUCH easier to fly than ragular head/tail rotor heli's, and parts are cheap. Car Kings sells them for $179, and they're on 2.4ghz, so you don't have to worry about glitches, channels, etc.

http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=EFLH1250

im not trying to be a dick but what did you learn from flying a cx that translated to a ccmp heli?

GYG
07-27-2007, 10:01 AM
For me, when I started into Heli's the CX helped me learn flight orientation, nose in hovering, etc. I've owned 3 different CX's in the last couple of years, and none of them had any issues with the 3 in 1.

I think the CX is a great learning tool for moving up to conventional heli's, and I think a lot of guys out on the other boards (rcgroups, rcuniverse, etc) would likely agree. You can fly it indoors without worrying about destroying your house, and parts are very cheap when you crash, which will happen.

No offense intended here, but my opinion is that telling someone to jump right into a collective pitch heli like a Blade CP or T-Rex with no experience on a simulator, or at least some time flying a counter rotating heli like a CX to gain some confidence that you can control a heli, is a crash course in heading for a crash course.

There isn't anything that much worse that setting your brand new $200-$300 heli on the ground, spooling it up, lifing off, crashing hard 5 seconds later, and having to spend $50 just to get it "flying" again.

Nice! What's really fun is to take the CX out at about 8pm when the wind is calm, and really fly it around. I've got a video of mine out there somewhere flying outside with about a 5-8 mph or so wind (which is probably too windy for it, but I wanted to see what it would do). I moved the control linkages out on the servo horns to get more travel, which made it fly quite a bit faster, and able to handle a little wind.

Here it is...

The Traxxas esc you're talking about must be the XL-10..it's yellow, right? Good esc...kinda big though, but would work good.

I'm guessing you want something with reverse? The new Novak Rooster looks very nice, but is a little more money. Nice thing is that it has lipo cutoff profiles should you ever run lipo batteries.

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXPMX0&P=ML

I'm a little partial to Tekin stuff myself, mainly because I've been sponsored by them for the last couple years. They have the Rebel 2 reversable esc that goes down to 10 turns for about $80-$85.

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXKYN6&P=ML

Ideally though, for the money, the Novak XRB brushless system is hard to beat for $159 (that's what Mark sells them for at his track in Hampton). Basically maintenance free, has lipo cutoff profiles, similar power to about a 14 turn motor.

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXRST1&P=ML

If it were me, I'd get the brushless setup just because it's so hassle free...it's more money up front, but none of the brushed motor issues to deal with later (comm cutting, brushes wearing out, etc).

Yeah, the Traxxas XL_10 one is the one I was considering. That is all good information though. I was considering going straight to the Novak, but that is a little more than I want to spend right now. I was thinking sticking to conventional Ni-MH batteries and brushed motors for now, and MAYBE upgrading to brushless once I build another car. Kinda looking for a 4wd electric truggy. No one seems to make them though.

AFAIK, there are at least a couple of truggy conversion kits available for the more common trucks.

If brushed motors are the food of choice for a while, if you haven't already, look into the V2 modified motors by Orion and Peak. The cylindrical brushes coming down at an angle are very easy on the comm, and you can go a lonnnng time between comm cuts with those motors.

I hadn't looked at new motors. I was going to see what Trinity had to offer, as I am quite pleased with the Chameleon i'm running now. But that's kickin to know that the GYG runs those, going to have to check those out some. I like the idea of less comm cuts too. Speaking of that, how often does something like that need done? I'm not real familiar with RC maitenance, (which is probably why my old associated truck was teh busted) and any other pointers would be excellent.

Eventually the commutator gets scored and burnt, and performance falls off. You can buy a comm stick, which cleans the surface of the commutator, but eventually the comm will wear and it'll need to be cut. Cutting down a big pencil eraser into strips, and using that to clean the comm will work ok too, but it's only a temporary fix.

A comm in good condition will look shiny gold...

I'm guessing you've never dumped it in rotor first trying an inverted hover? :-) When I crash, I usually dump it into the ground doing something stupid that I shouldn't be trying! Ha!

Good solid crashes on my Night Ranger 3D would cost me at least $25 (main shaft $7, blades $15, grips $6, boom $4, etc).

Get one of those big beefy RPM bumpers. They may look a bit janky, but they're only a couple of bucks and they'll keep you from crunching those a-arms as easily. I think that big frankensteined brush guard I had was the only thing that kept me from mashing mine up right before you did...

Yeah, the RS4MT would make a better basher than a converted XXX-4. The XX-4 and XXX-4 need a few metal hopups to strengthen them up a bit, but 4wd's by nature are just more fragile than 2wd cars, and definitely require more maintenance with two diffs, belts that wear, etc.

hubb hobby still has belts and diffs instock for the rs4 and the great thing about hpi is the back stock alot of parts for there older cars. i call them often for parts on my mini nitro rs4

for off road i would much rather have fluid filled gear diffs maybe thats because of all the time i spend racing 1/8 scale buggys, ball diffs require to much work for off road with mod motors. now on road is a whole diffrent story

Just be careful on where you go fly it if it's a nitro engine...most cities don't allow you to fly gas powered planes at anywhere other than a designated r/c flying field.

I flew planes for 2-3 years before getting into Heli's...I've still got my old Parkzone Typhoon sitting in the closet that I've been thinking about ressurecting........

My buddy and I actually built a plane a few years back. We found a club near the hwy 169 and hwy 610 area in the NW metro.

The first time we flew the plane, the instructor didn't have the cable to link his Futaba radio to our Futaba radio so he stood closely by while training us to fly the thing. Well my buddy was doing good until his first turn and the plane dive bombed into a dirt field before the instructor could recover it. I was able to salvage the radio receiver but that's about it. So I'm getting close to finishing my 2nd plane but probably won't fly it until an instructor has the cable to link our radios.
