So there was this scam Mazda on the internets. I decided to reply to him. I'm going fishin!

Here is his first reply. and his email address.

"Jamie Caradine" <jasc553@gmail.com>

Good day,
First of all I'm very glad you like my car. It runs and looks just great.
It has no flaws or dents, no leaks and never had an accident. I have its clear title in hand and it's registered in Arlington, Virginia. I serve the US Marine Corps and I'm stationed at Naval Air Station Pensacola. I won't be able to leave the base until October, so I will have the car shipped to you at my expense because I benefit of various discounts.
I will pay the shipping fees and the insurance of the car.
All documents will be provided to you along with the car including the bill of sale on your name.
The price is so low because I really need money for personal reasons.
I'm a serious seller and I prefer to deal only with a serious buyer who understands my situation.
Anyway, I must remind you that I want a fast deal because I need the money as soon as possible and that is also the reason why I am selling it at a very low price... so if you are really interested in buying it, please reply. The final price is $4600.
I will wait for your email, so that we can move forward with this deal.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
V/R

My reply:

Understandable. We all have our personal reasons. I personally want a an FD! My only real question is..... your mail address does not seem to match your sig at the bottom. This is not neecesarily a concern of mine, other than the fact that I have seen several very convincing car deals out there in my day, and come very close to purchasing, only to discover that it was some sort of scam deal. I want to make sure that before I decide to make this investment, that I can be sure that I am proceeding in the safest manner possible.

His reply:

I leased this vehicle new in 1994, bought out the lease three years later and have owned it ever since. But for the stereo (Sony Xplod) and tires (Bridgestone Potenza S-O3s with maybe 2000 miles on them), it is all stock (most original) and has been treated well. It spent the first few years outside, the next few years outside with a nice cover (that's what's in the trunk in the pics and it conveys) and since then has spent most of it's time in the parking garage at work when I wasn't using it on nice days to commute.
It had a major service done last year and just the other day had a 12,000 mile service performed and a Virginia safety inspection. Everything works great.
It has a tan leather interior, A/C, power locks and windows, a sunroof and cruise control.
This is the VIN: JM1FD3331R0302447 and this is the carfax history report: http://www.carfax.com/cfm/FSBO.cfm?r...FX000015858653 .
I hate to let it go but I don't have any other choice.
A few minor things to note:
Windshield wiper arms are rusty. (See pics.) They got that way a long time ago and work great, just kind of unsightly. I've not noticed anything like that anywhere else on the car.
Clean title and clean CarFax.
That's it. It drives beautifully, it's fast and it handles great.
The rest of the pictures are here: http://s197.photobucket.com/albums/aa65/gozaimas/RX-7/
Feel free to e-mail me any questions.
The car will be shipped on my expense from Arlington, Virginia and will be at your door in 3 days tops.
If you want to continue, please send me your full name and your shipping address so that I will let eBay Protection Program know that you are interested. You will receive an email from them instructing you about how to send payment and they'll release the funds to me only after you receive and inspect the car. I think that this is a fair way to make business and I hope that you will agree.
Also, I must let you know that I want the payment prior shipping since I will ship it the same day the payment is completed. For the moment I can only accept a wire transfer as a payment method and the fastest is MoneyGram.
The most important thing in all my activity here is that I am affiliated to eBay's Protection program, and I have a a purchase protection account for 5000$ and i assume you know what this means. In case we close this deal, you are protected by eBay's Protection Program:
1) In case you do not receive the car exactly as I have described it to you or you do not receive it at all, eBay will give you a full refund of the amount that you have paid the eBay agent, although this is not the case.
2) You will send the money to eBay Protection Program and I will get a notification to ship the car. After you receive and see that the car is the one you want, you just notify eBay to forward me the payment details in order for me to pick up my money.
Let me know if this is OK with so we can move forward with this deal!
Also please write me what you decide because i have a few possible buyers.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

My reply:

The Carfax looks good. I wanted to make absolutely sure that the car was perfect and it looks to be that way. It is a beautiful car. I am going to forward the information to my Finacial Advisor. His name is Fred, and he handles all my monetary transactions. I would expect an email from him soon detailing the payment, and the moneygram ID's and so forth. He will also give you all of my personal information, so that the eBay ID's can be verified, and that I can be sure to be protected. Once I hear from him, I will clear the money to be wired, and complete the transaction upon delivery of the car. One question I do have is, who are you going to use as a shipping line? I want to contact them to make sure that I can have the vehicle delivered to an alternate address in the Minneapolis area as opposed to my home, as this car is going to be a gift for my wife, and I want to surprise her. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thomas Stephens.

Nice... you gotta keep the ball in his court if you want to have real fun with him. Make him do all the work and eventually get him to jump through some sweet hoops.

Maybe we could do this good-cop bad-cop style? Someone else can play your business partner, or something like that....

That might be the plan. Jay, we need an official sounding email address for you and for I. I'm going to get him off of my work email in the morning and hopefully start with the games later tomorrow.

Wow. This guy is basically going down the list of "how to recognize a scam" and nailing every checkbox as he goes!

You'd think they'd throw at least a little creativity into the mix to try and keep people guessing.

Also, I was really REALLY hoping that the car wouldn't have Virginia plates.... oh well.

I love it. Moneygram, the works. Who do I be to get the shipping confirmation? I was thinking my biological father. He died in 1992. Think that'll be funny?

dmention7
08-24-2007, 09:55 AM
Is there any way you could leave subtle hints to indicate that the payment is being sent from nigeria? Like you use your dad's name and your address for the shipping details, but then "slip up" and put a nigerian street address on some other correspondance?

Maybe you could tell him you contacted ebay's protection program, and that you were sceptical about them protecting craigslist purchases, but that you were delighted to find out that he has flawless feedback, and they'll back him up 100%. You've gotta play a complete rube and sound crazy-excited, and then keep coming up with little stalls (just like they do).

I know. He already threw me a curveball, I was going to ask him for the VIN and have it carfaxed. That would have been my next bet. I think what i'm going to do is reply and tell him that I am going to have my "financial advisor" contact him. That's where you come in.

I was pretty suspicious, but I figured I would pursue it a bit further...

Matias,

Thank you for your response. I am very interested. I will call my bank and make arrangements tomorrow for the financial portion. Can you please forward me the VIN? This is one of the first pieces of information that the bank will ask for.

Do you have someone who can show the car? I would like to have someone take a look at it. I feel a bit odd about buying a car that I have never seen in person.

I think we can complete the transaction very quickly so that you get the money that you need. It sounds like this will be a great win/win situation.

Thank you for your service in the Marine Corps, my family and I appreciate your contribution to the protection of our quality of life.

Best Regards,

Cameron

I decided to play along...

I will take it. I have never seen eBay act as an escrow agent for a transaction that was not made on eBay. So if there are problems with that, we can complete the transaction via my bank.

Please feel free to contact me at 503-###-#### to work out the details and complete the transaction.

I look forward to driving the car soon.

Thanks,

Cameron

Have you guys ever checked out craigslist for reasons other than looking for winter beaters lately? There is some pretty funny stuff!!! Like this, for example:

http://www.craigslist.org/about/best/nsh/398608788.html

That road rage one is pretty good. Though I woulda just run the light if the guy had gotten out of his car, or, if I were driving a beater, just thrown it in reverse and floored it to do a little creative rearrangement of his hood.
