Lots and lots and lots of bondo?
mazdamn02
09-06-2007, 11:52 PM
There's some rust but not nearly as bad as one would expect. Should have this beast by tomorrow night.
Guess how much new rotors cost for the ROFLGOLF? $12! Sweet....

09-07-2007, 04:12 PM
I need to get the brakes swapped out like yesterday, i already have the parts needed. its going to be an interesting ride home in the right lane with a mile in between me and the car ahead of me! Then I'll worry about the idle at 2k rpm.....
aviateur
09-07-2007, 04:33 PM
We're gonna have fun with this thing. It's in very good shape especially the interior.
Josh, you should ask if the car has been chipped. It's doubtful but that could be the cause of the high idle speeds
mndsm
09-07-2007, 04:33 PM
Where is this thing? I could be bribed into assisting you. If the brakes are as easy as they should be, we can get them done tonight.
aviateur
09-07-2007, 04:35 PM
I'm also up for working on the car tonight if you want help.
mazdamn02
09-07-2007, 04:37 PM
if we could get jay to assist with a place to put them on....
i have the rotors in my trunk, but the problem is pads are in burnsville.... what's going on tomorrow?
dmention7
09-07-2007, 04:43 PM
Josh, bring it over whenever... if nothing else, it can sit in my side-yard at least until it has working brakes installed.
mndsm
09-07-2007, 04:58 PM
Nothing for me. Work in the AM, can arrange to do brakes tomorrow. I suggest acquiring a Chiltons for that car in the mean time.

I'm getting the 'bentley' manual with it, included in the price of purchase! lol.

Thanks to everyone for helping to make the ROFLGOLF happen! Jeff for drivin me around, jay for das brake job, and tom and jay for the entertaining run to the junkyard!
I drove the beast from Burnsville to Eden Prairie this morning, and to my amusement it got quite a few looks on my way in to work!
I dropped it off at a shop this morning to get the rear brakes done and get a estimate on the idle/throttle problem.
I'm thinking that I need to spend a little time on craigslist to see about getting some kc daylighters and perhaps a winch....
mndsm

Good times this weekend! Lemme know if you need the garage space again for coolant flushing or anything (garden hose method ftw).
mndsm
09-10-2007, 01:11 PM
Yeah and it's Minneapolis city water so dumping 20 year old coolant into it is probably an improvement.
mazdamn02
09-10-2007, 03:09 PM
Got ROFLGOLF back and they fixed idle, with out replacing my thingamajig!?!?!
Pretty sweet IMO, the part costs $170, labor $180 to replace that thing? I think I'm ok w/o it!
dmention7
09-10-2007, 03:14 PM
So, what did they do to fix it then? I take it, they didn't charge you for the parts or labor, cuz I'd be damn pissed if it cost $350 to fix the idle on a $950 car

Just wait till ROFLGOLF gets its winch, we'll see how mod garage faces up to ROFLGOLF!.................. j/k!
mndsm
09-11-2007, 12:41 PM
All the torque that Roflgolf has, and jay's garages questionable construction I see ROFLGOLF> Jay's Mod garage in that one.

Regardless of questionable construction quality of the mod garage, I'd probably be better of there instead of my office during a tornado.

You're not familiar with true race cars I see, they all have fire extinguishers!
Plus its not a bad idea if the alternator or A/C froze and started on fire or some'n.

I can't believe projekt ROFLGOLF has fallen in the ranks of The Lounge!
Anywho I got the fuel filter replaced today only to learn that the fuel pump is doin some leakin (which explains the gassy old car smell that I've come to love....)
Oh ya, clutch sucks because cable is rusting and binding.
South Central Imports sounds like they're gonna hook me up with a good deal on getting both fixed. Those guys are teh cool.

How's the clutch situation working out?
mazdamn02
10-12-2007, 05:01 PM
Got the clutch cable replaced ($70) and it runs like a champ. Now all I have to do is replace the cracked windshield and its as good as new. Probably throw an oil change in there at some point...
dmention7
10-12-2007, 05:03 PM
oh, so it was just the cable. good stuff.
mazdamn02
10-12-2007, 05:25 PM

I'm absolutley sure the clutch had about 50k miles taken off of it in the 'incident,' but it runs and for now that's all that matters.
Next is the supercharger, lol!

As long as the previous owners have not inserted metal bars into the car in any weird spots, we should be good. Only thing that would concern me would be rusted bolts and such, but given how easily we did the brakes (and that was obviously the only time those bolts had been moved since the car was built), it doesn't worry me too much
mndsm
10-15-2007, 04:02 PM
Well it could be a case of Beastiva where we need to torch the bolts......
But fire=good so that's ok.

ROFLGOLF may be out of commission until spring. I'll give you one hint: bad hoses...
dmention7
12-19-2007, 10:32 AM
Radiator? Power steering?
mndsm
12-19-2007, 10:33 AM
All of the above i'm sure.
mazdamn02
12-19-2007, 10:42 AM
Radiator. And then its getting in to my engine, which isn't really promising. I don't feel like spending 1k on it when i could just do it with the help of some good friends and leinies in the spring...
dmention7
12-19-2007, 10:45 AM
Wait, so the hoses are just leaking? Or are they shedding chunks of rubber and getting into the block?
dmention7
12-19-2007, 10:45 AM
Cuz replacing your entire set off coolant hoses shouldn't cost much more than $100 and take a weekend.
mazdamn02
12-19-2007, 10:48 AM
Cuz replacing your entire set off coolant hoses shouldn't cost much more than $100 and take a weekend.
I just like throwing figures around, 1k sounded good and dramatic.
I'm not paying a shop to do it because its something a DIYer could do. Mazda shall meet snow soon. I'll just keep it really clean or else :KANE:.
dmention7
12-19-2007, 10:51 AM
Okay, so it is just leaking hoses? Yah, that's a piece of cake then.
dmention7
12-19-2007, 10:51 AM
Seriously, we should be able to replace every single coolant hose for $100
mndsm
12-19-2007, 11:14 AM
Yeah, there should be MAYBE 4 total coolant hoses on the car. IF I had to make a guess, they're probably all the sam gauge as well, which means, trip to Fleet Farm, plus rubber hose cutters+ banjo clamps +RTV=win. Not even 50$. We could even paint em so they look cool!
mazdamn02
01-05-2008, 01:28 PM
I have replacement hose and clamps for problem hose, now i need a radiator system "burper" to purge out the air...
dmention7
01-05-2008, 01:57 PM
nah, you fill up the radiator, fill the reservoir to the full mark, idle the engine for a few minutes and repeat until the reservoir stays full. Any air in the coolant system will get purged into the reservoir within a few minutes.
Repair shops don't have time to do it that way so they use something like that "burper" you're talking about, but it's completely uneccessary for the DIY-er
mazdamn02
10-27-2008, 10:34 AM
Just an update for anyone who cares, ROFLGOLF is rockin full time now. I've put ~250 miles on since last Thursday, it runs awesome.
I know Tom saw it running last in June, when it was running uber rich, but that has been fixed now. Throttle position switch was stuck or something, $0 repair.
I'll still have to look at doing them radiator hoses some day, but I think its good for now. I replaced a clamp and I think that took care of it.
