View Full Version : Beastiva is go!

dmention7

Well, not "go" in the literal sense of the word, since the car came home on a flatbed truck (courtesy of Josh's AAA membership!) with the transmission in the trunk, and a new clutch in the driver's seat. But "go" in the sense that it has begun its transformation from a puny little 1990 Ford Festiva into the fearsome monster that has become known by a single word... Little is known about the changes that are to come, and even those who are aware of the scantest details are so haunted by the idea that they are reduced to whimpering little girls at the mere mention of "Beastiva".

Without further ado, I present:

Stage 1: Beastiva is Born

Few have seen Beastiva in its original form, much less captured it on film. Only when it lay dormant during the initial stages of its metamorphosis did we dare approach it. (Notice Tom and Colin cautiously maintaining their distance in the background)

http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/2710/dscf1284fr8.th.jpg (http://img211.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1284fr8.jpg) http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/8971/dscf1285ob3.th.jpg (http://img299.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1285ob3.jpg) http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/2658/dscf1286me9.th.jpg (http://img212.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1286me9.jpg) http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/8500/dscf1289bu9.th.jpg (http://img207.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1289bu9.jpg)

Not long after we began photographing the auto, strange and threatening messages began to appear in various places. Most would have taken this as a sign that it was time to leave, but whether through curious stupidity or stubborn persistance, we continued to investigate. The final message was puzzling, though it appeared to be phallic in nature--perhaps this proto-Beastiva was asserting its masculinity?

http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/491/dscf1291dw1.th.jpg (http://img526.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1291dw1.jpg) http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/3798/dscf1292ac4.th.jpg (http://img207.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1292ac4.jpg) http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/4037/dscf1293je4.th.jpg (http://img124.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1293je4.jpg) http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/553/dscf1294mh6.th.jpg (http://img124.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1294mh6.jpg) http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/8050/dscf1295vz4.th.jpg (http://img174.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1295vz4.jpg)

At once, the messages disappeared, and the vehicle took on a darker, much more menacing appearance. We probably should have left when we had the chance, but it was obviously too late now. Nothing left to do, but document the horror that was soon to unfold.

http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/2544/dscf1297gz0.th.jpg (http://img211.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1297gz0.jpg) http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/9962/dscf1299op1.th.jpg (http://img293.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1299op1.jpg) http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/5309/dscf1300oc6.th.jpg (http://img154.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1300oc6.jpg) http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/7533/dscf1303hj9.th.jpg (http://img211.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1303hj9.jpg)

Slowly, and little by little... a new set of markings began to appear, furthering the developing Beastiva's intimidating appearance. (despite Colin's calm and collected expression, he was in fact quite intimidated) At first they were difficult to make out...

http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/894/dscf1306xm5.th.jpg (http://img337.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1306xm5.jpg) http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/4249/dscf1308mw7.th.jpg (http://img514.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1308mw7.jpg) http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/451/dscf1311hx8.th.jpg (http://img206.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1311hx8.jpg)

But it quickly became all too apparent that Beastiva's visual transformation was in full-swing.

http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/7159/dscf1316ua4.th.jpg (http://img159.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1316ua4.jpg) http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/7195/dscf1318uc7.th.jpg (http://img178.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1318uc7.jpg) http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/9924/dscf1322bx8.th.jpg (http://img178.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1322bx8.jpg) http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/6756/dscf1324za0.th.jpg (http://img161.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1324za0.jpg) http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/9462/dscf1326ke2.th.jpg (http://img179.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1326ke2.jpg)

By the time we realized exactly what was going on, it was too late. The last of its protective cocoon was thrown off with a mighty roar, and Beastiva revealed its glorious new hide. Our eyes were blinded by the sheer level of awesomeness, but the camera caught it all.

http://img382.imageshack.us/img382/6663/dscf1329ky2.th.jpg (http://img382.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1329ky2.jpg) http://img382.imageshack.us/img382/9871/dscf1328mm0.th.jpg (http://img382.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1328mm0.jpg) http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/6128/dscf1330sf0.th.jpg (http://img299.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1330sf0.jpg) http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/7474/dscf1333em4.th.jpg (http://img504.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1333em4.jpg) http://img453.imageshack.us/img453/8994/dscf1331gr9.th.jpg (http://img453.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf1331gr9.jpg)

Fortunately for us, Beastiva was still weary from the exhausting ordeal, and was unable to move under its own power. I shudder to think about what might have happened, had its transmission been mated to its engine, instead of sitting on the other side of the garage floor. However, something tells me that it won't be long until Beastiva has the mobility to match its ferocious appearance.....

Stay tuned for Stage 2: Beastiva Awakens

I will say otherwise. Next time i'm springing for a better roll of tape. That is what held me back on this one. Need that fancy quarter inch blue shit that's like a million dollars a roll. Overall I do think it's cool, I just think it could be better.

dmention7

True. I can stomach 7 dollars for a better job.

mazdamn02
09-17-2007, 04:47 PM
Did the paint apply pretty evenly? I can't really tell from the pix.
What kind of paint did you use?

dmention7
09-17-2007, 04:49 PM
RUSTOLEUM BITCH! lol...

The flat black body is a little bit splotchy, and there's some texture to the hood from some shit that settled while we were painting (sanding? who the hell sands??) But it's not bad in person.

I bet the next one we do will be twice as good though, even with the same supplies

mndsm
09-17-2007, 05:05 PM
I think that rustoleum flat black was the wrong paint to use. It was paint, not primer. Next time, we use real primer.

mazdamn02
09-17-2007, 05:13 PM
Did you sand the body before you started? Wonder if that would help for next time......?

mndsm
09-17-2007, 05:18 PM
Sanding? Hell, we barely washed it. No, it was the paint.

dmention7
09-17-2007, 05:20 PM
Yeah, surface prep consisted of scrubbing down the body with some scotch-brite pads and dish soap. If rust-oleum won't stick to that, I don't know what it WILL stick to.

mazdamn02
09-17-2007, 05:29 PM
I'm sure animal flesh and human hair would stick just fine!

I tried to catch you a stray cat at my apartment, however I failed.

Josh, it can't be just ANY cat. It's gotta be one of the following: toyger, bengal, miscellaneous "exotic bred" kitties (subject to approval, as I know how devious you guys can be), and/or hypoallergenic. Mwahahaha~

Nekko Noir
09-17-2007, 07:06 PM
Tom, stop being so hard on yourself. Even though I was jokingly giving you guys crap about it by being all "nit-picky" I do think it looks really cool. Especially after you get the silver outlines done around on the flames, it's going to look bad-ass!

dmention7
09-17-2007, 07:06 PM
The "order from canada" he's referring to is a 1.6L turbo engine that fits right in with almost no need for modification. That's the part that may or may not happen some time next year, depending on fundage.

Nekko Noir
09-17-2007, 07:09 PM

dmention7
09-17-2007, 07:10 PM
Probably $5-600 depending on shipping costs.

Nekko Noir
09-17-2007, 07:12 PM
*faints*

It doesn't sound too bad for a turbo engine, but I dunno. If it is, then you're lucky I don't know much about cars. :p Either way, it's a lot of money that we don't have.

dmention7
09-17-2007, 07:14 PM
It's actually dirt cheap. Which is why project beastiva was so attractive. but the upside is that I'm bound to enjoy the car whether or not money permits a badass engine like that.

There are other alternatives too: the engine from my old escort would fit (not sure how much work it takes), and those can probably be had for about half the cost of the 1.6 turbo.

mndsm
09-18-2007, 09:51 AM
the 1.8gt motor is nearly a direct fit, IIRC, it should be as easy as the 1.6t if not easier. Also, 400$ for a motor and another 1-200 in shipping is still HELLA cheap for a turbo motor.

And Nanami, I'm only hard on myself because I know for a fact I could have done better. I let my impatience get in the way of something that could have been better. Like I said, next time, i'm getting the right stuff.

As far as looking into a 2.3T from posts earlier... The 2.3T from a Tbird/SVO Mustang/XRTi is different from the 2.3T from a Probe. The Probe is FWD the others are RWD.

I had two TBird motors for my '78 Pinto and I almost got a 2.3T for my '89 Probe, I don't see how you could swap between the two. They are similar/same displacements, but they are different motors.
