Cold weather FTL

The last gas bill was barely more than our summer/fall bills. But the one that came today was more than double :(

The ironic thing is that when we had an apartment with paid heat, our place stayed so damn hot that we would actually have to leave the windows cracked open all winter long.

I know what you mean. The gas part of our bill was twice as much as the electric part.

Though, the whole bill was barely more than what our bills were in the apartment in summer. The combination of a window AC unit + drafty apartment + janky old fridge that ran all the time = fail.

Up until yesterday we didn't have working heat in our place. A maintenance guy came out twice and couldn't fix it. On top of that there was no seal on any of the downstairs windows or front door so the cold air came right in undeterred. I had to sleep with 2 blankets while wearing an undershirt, tshirt, sweatshirt, jacket, hat, and gloves, jeans, socks, and shoes. Luckily, our bill for the heat last month was like $20 lol.

I pay like $80 a month all year on the pay plan. Get a programmable therastat Jay it made my bill go down $20 buck a month.

Or live in an apt above crazy old people. They keep the heat to like 120, so it keeps my place pretty warm. I've only had to have the heat on a total of maybe 20 minutes this winter.

We have one. I think the main problem is that our walls are poorly insulated, so no matter how warm the air temp is, radiative heat loss to the walls makes you feel chilly. Right now, it feels nice and toasty while the furnace is kicking out hot air, but as soon as it turns off, I'm reaching for a blanket. Maybe I'll try kicking it down a few degrees and see if it even feels much different.


Anybody ever done blown insulation? Doesn't look like that tough of a job as long as you don't mind cutting and patching up a bajillion little holes in your walls.
