Weekly Meets Facelift?

FunK73

New Member
This was started in the chatbox. Basically we;re trying to figure out what we should try to do to get everyone to show up to the meets. Whether they are no longer weekly, moved, time change, etc. Discuss.

My basic thought was to move the meets slightly west, maybe calhoun area, to something more like a park, and maybe change meet time to 7 to avoid traffic.

chat recap

Actions 17/02/2011 22:12 <MazdaMINI> Jon its your job! Go!
Actions 17/02/2011 22:11 <MazdaMINI> I think we should throw these ideas into a thread like Tom said
Actions 17/02/2011 22:11 <FunK73> and you know you can count on me to be there tom, i havent missed one in the last year and a half lol
Actions 17/02/2011 22:10 <1Kris06> yeah, C&C, lions tap, and then something else?
Actions 17/02/2011 22:10 <FunK73> Think morries would host a weekly meet?
Actions 17/02/2011 22:10 <MazdaMINI> maybe its after that go to a park and grill out?
Actions 17/02/2011 22:10 <mndsm> And itd help if we all olled in at once.
Actions 17/02/2011 22:10 <MazdaMINI> that is a MNmazda meet
Actions 17/02/2011 22:10 <mndsm> Yeah, we need to have HUGE presence there.
Actions 17/02/2011 22:09 <FunK73> that already exists, its called Cars n Coffee lol
Actions 17/02/2011 22:09 <MazdaMINI> maybe we do a once a month meet on a weekend minimal
Actions 17/02/2011 22:08 <FunK73> only other parks i really know are within 15 miles of me, so not really cental lol
Actions 17/02/2011 22:08 <StealthSpeed3> what about Hyland Park?
Actions 17/02/2011 22:08 <mndsm> Write crap down in the thread.
Actions 17/02/2011 22:08 <mndsm> I dinno. Im tired.
Actions 17/02/2011 22:07 <MazdaMINI> but nice nights everyone goes walking and what not
Actions 17/02/2011 22:06 <FunK73> if its outside of business hours, theres a huge lot on the north side right off lake
Actions 17/02/2011 22:06 <FunK73> depends when we go
Actions 17/02/2011 22:06 <MazdaMINI> sucks for parking though
Actions 17/02/2011 22:05 <FunK73> little more central
Actions 17/02/2011 22:05 <FunK73> meets at calhoun?
Actions 17/02/2011 22:04 <Workdawg> >.>
Actions 17/02/2011 22:04 <Workdawg> or mebbe buffalo tap, down in savage... <.<
Actions 17/02/2011 22:04 <MazdaMINI> I think thats a good idea!
Actions 17/02/2011 22:03 <FunK73> do something other than stand in a parking lot
Actions 17/02/2011 22:03 <FunK73> thats what im saying taya
Actions 17/02/2011 22:02 <MazdaMINI> we could do a cook out
Actions 17/02/2011 22:02 <Workdawg> porkys/red robin over in plymouth alternating or something would make more sense
Actions 17/02/2011 22:02 <MazdaMINI> eh maybe como park
Actions 17/02/2011 22:01 <mndsm> Como is always good for that... but metro parks close at 10
Actions 17/02/2011 22:01 <Workdawg> cause 5 miles north is better?
Actions 17/02/2011 22:01 <FunK73> meet at some park at lets say 7 to avoid rush hour
Actions 17/02/2011 22:01 <FunK73> i vote we find a nice park to chill ast or something
Actions 17/02/2011 22:00 <mndsm> Not "I got shit else going on"
Actions 17/02/2011 22:00 <mndsm> What we need is people to say "Ok, shits going down this day. I want to be there"
Actions 17/02/2011 22:00 <FunK73> taya has the right idea there
Actions 17/02/2011 22:00 <StealthSpeed3> right. so find a location that works for everybody. like the b-dubs in roseville
Actions 17/02/2011 22:00 <1Kris06> trying to come up with something every week, so we just fall back on porky
Actions 17/02/2011 22:00 <MazdaMINI> Eh just bring the baby along to meets
Actions 17/02/2011 22:00 <FunK73> well lets start here, what are of the metro are we aiming for?
Actions 17/02/2011 21:59 <StealthSpeed3> ok, what's the second? what's the big one that we hear the most from people, esp those in the northern metro?
Actions 17/02/2011 21:59 <mndsm> I cant reasonably expect picklz to drive from fukin Ramsey to come out for a BCS and some half dead rings.
Actions 17/02/2011 21:59 <1Kris06> is once a week too often?
Actions 17/02/2011 21:59 <mndsm> The drives to meets since they're NEVER centralized.
Actions 17/02/2011 21:59 <mndsm> The biggest single complaint? The staleness and the bullshit at pr0kys.
Actions 17/02/2011 21:58 <FunK73> could we find a nice place to meet at like a lake or something?
Actions 17/02/2011 21:58 <mndsm> And my time will be shorter, so it has to mean more.
Actions 17/02/2011 21:58 <StealthSpeed3> what's the biggest complaint from people?
Actions 17/02/2011 21:58 <MazdaMINI> maybe its a weekend meet since people work during the week
Actions 17/02/2011 21:58 <mndsm> People are growing up too. Whether or not I like it, I got a kid on the way. Means I gotta get my shit together.
Actions 17/02/2011 21:58 <FunK73> well since its a car based club, i would hope a car get together lol
Actions 17/02/2011 21:58 <mndsm> What will people show up to?
Actions 17/02/2011 21:58 <mndsm> Thats the problem right there.
Actions 17/02/2011 21:57 <FunK73> very true, but nothing seems to be that lol
Actions 17/02/2011 21:57 <FunK73> kretty isnt gonna show up to any of our meets anymore, dont worry lol
Actions 17/02/2011 21:57 <mndsm> We need things people will show up to.
Actions 17/02/2011 21:56 <mndsm> The thing is, the drink wasn't too strong, it was all the twigs and leaves and shit in it that made it fucked up
Actions 17/02/2011 21:56 <1Kris06> ppl like kretty only show up cuz they know wed is porkys, thats all
Actions 17/02/2011 21:56 <FunK73> come porkys time, or wherever we start to meet in the nice months, we need to get everyone back
Actions 17/02/2011 21:56 <FunK73> if the drink is too strong, you dilute it
Actions 17/02/2011 21:55 <FunK73> not a good way to start off a solid club...
Actions 17/02/2011 21:54 <1Kris06> i think the only way we cut out the 'hanger ons' as tom stated earlier is to switch up the meets every so often and not tell the 'others'
Actions 17/02/2011 21:54 <MazdaMINI> sounds like a good plan to me but we will all have to work together to get there!
Actions 17/02/2011 21:53 <FunK73> i just want this club to be right up eurowerks' ass
Actions 17/02/2011 21:52 <FunK73> or luxury auto now
Actions 17/02/2011 21:52 <FunK73> that was maserati, not mazda lol
Actions 17/02/2011 21:52 <FunK73> it would be awsome if they would though
Actions 17/02/2011 21:52 <1Kris06> morries had the 8c down there one time
Actions 17/02/2011 21:51 <FunK73> i doubt they would tbh
Actions 17/02/2011 21:50 <FunK73> i wanna see EVERYONE down there, just to get our name out
Actions 17/02/2011 21:50 <mndsm> I need to talk to those uys like WHOA.
Actions 17/02/2011 21:50 <mndsm> I kinda wanna know if we can drag a few new cars from morries down for thta.
Actions 17/02/2011 21:50 <mndsm> I will be at every one I am not working.
Actions 17/02/2011 21:50 <mndsm> C&C is a given.
Actions 17/02/2011 21:50 <mndsm> And that is part of the plan with Targa. We get associated with legit racing....
Actions 17/02/2011 21:50 <FunK73> well i can tell you now C&C is gonna be something we should do in a big way
Actions 17/02/2011 21:49 <mndsm> Smartest thing you've said all week A.
Actions 17/02/2011 21:49 <mndsm> Im not gonna lie, I've been known to launch my car once or twice. But even I know we gotta knock that shit off.
Actions 17/02/2011 21:49 <StealthSpeed3> so BIR/rock falls/Road America
Actions 17/02/2011 21:49 <mndsm> Crack down HARD.
Actions 17/02/2011 21:48 <FunK73> racers are always gonna race, thats a given, we just gotta crack down right?
Actions 17/02/2011 21:48 <mndsm> It needs to go 100% legit. fo reals.

So more or less we want to see some of you old timers come back and help us make mnmazda what it should have always been, a true strong car club and bunch of friends. No bullshit, no drama, just a bunch of adults hanging out with a common interest. A fresh start.

As Taya pointed out however parking is a bit of a bitch in the calhoun area so any other parks/places that you guys can think of?

I was also thinking that we could do a meet after Cars and Coffee hopefully getting a large group to Cars and Coffee then heading somewhere and doing a grill out or going out to eat.

I say we also do that, but keep it separate, cause I know a lot of people won't be willing to make it to that.

YSOSLO

Not to sound like an old fart or anything, but those of us "older guys" that aren't around as much are mainly not around for 1 major reason...the wife and kids. It's tough, because the 7pm meets WOULD eliminate some traffic hassles, however anyone with little kids knows they go to bed anywhere from 7-8-9pm depending on age, so the later meet time might alienate some that have kids that go to bed earlier (like me, cuz my girls hit the hay around 8:00, so I'm history by 7:30 or so). AJ, Nate, Mojo, Me and others I'm probably forgetting and soon Tom and Taya, all deal with scheduling around the kid(s).

Rather than trying to get the family folks to the evening meets, I'd recommend planning once-a-month meets on a weekend with a date and time locked in at least a few weeks ahead of time and plan them for late morning (10am or later) or late afternoon (3-4pm or so) if you want families there, because lunch and naptime are important for little kids. Keep in mind, I'm not saying ONLY cater to families, because a variety of events will draw a variety of people. I'm just trying to give some insight into a segment that it sounds like you're interested in courting. I heard Como Park mentioned and I think that would be a GREAT idea, but rather than limit it to the park I'd recommend considering picnicking closer to the zoo so people can hit that before or after the picnic without a really long walk or having to move their vehicles. Just a thought.

I had also mentioned my commitment to organizing a drive-in movie meet, but that might also be a great option for a once-a-month meet since there are typically 2-3 movies each night which makes it more likely that something will be showing that people want to see, and it's definitely a "car" meet.

SUDO Make me a SAMCH
It is a good thread - I see in the chat it was asked why people don't show up - I can tell you personally there were a large # of reasons I only made it to a few porky's meets last summer -

1) Location - this is two fold, one it's not anywhere near my house, and two I'm a little burned out on porkys after 3-4 years of weekly meets, I rarely order food there anymore as its between meh and crap.

3) Timing - this ties in with location - People seem to meet between 5 and 6, that's right in the middle or rush-hour, and if I'm not stuck working late, Im usually already home by 4-4:30, meaning I'd have to fight traffic again to make it back to the other side of the metro, not fun.

4) Work - Yeah work has been a bitch this last year, that's about all Im gonna say about that.

5) The BS - Most of the Sr. Members can tell you Porky's this past summer especially was far different than it was in years 1-2, even 3. If people enjoy it that's fine, but it wasn't my sceene. I don't want to be associated with people that are going street racing, bombing backroads on a regular basis at night (stupid), revving and doing other stupid shit in the parking lot, etc. Again not dogging on anyone if that's your thing, but its not me.

I hope some other people post up, I'm NOT saying anything should be changed to fit what I want, I'd rather have the majority of the members happy than just a few, but that's my take. I do think every other week would promote more people to show up, and i like the idea of the once a month weekend meet, C&C, Lions Tap, Morries, maybe a park in the afternoon, etc. Make a schedule and a day out of it so as people are free they know where the meet will be. This, as Pete said, would likely work out better for those members with Kids/Wives.

I don't know that we want to, or ever will become as large or the same as (god I hope not) eurowerks, this is a more laid back club with a broader demographic (imo), the expectation that everyone will be free to make it to any one meet, regardless of dates, times, location, etc. is not realistic.

Owl Exterminator!!
I am just throwing out there that I would love to make it to some meets and try and get involved in this group, but making it to porky's and other weeknight meets is impossible due to the fact that I work nights until 10. So the idea of well planned out weekend meets really appeals to me.

There's going to need to be more than just one option.

I'm liking the idea of a 'monthly' larger meet including families and those who are otherwise not able to attend during the weekly meets.

Speaking of the weekly meets, what's everyone's take on a bi-weekly meet? I'm thinking it'd be a better option.

Why? C&C is on the first Saturday of the month. Most of us will be at that. Now, make the 3rd Saturdayy the 'monthly' meet and the bi-weekly meets can be on whatever day during the 2nd and 4th weeks of the month and just like that it's once a week.

Combine that with the likelihood of at least once a month installs, or impromptu meetings, dinners, movie or game nights, etc. and you have a decently full schedule.

I think the Monthly meets schedule ahead of time would be great so that individual with families could make it work. As far as I am concerned Tom will be attending the meets even if the child and I do not. But I plan on still attending and just bring along the child. I know this is not realistic for everyone and don't know that everyone wants a child there but thats my plan for the moment at least!

I completely agree with everything both Picklz and YSOSLO say. Kid and traffic keeps me away from them. I think those weekly meets have lead to a cut back in the monthly style meets we originally started with, so getting the monthly thing going again is a top notch idea in my book. I think some questions should be asked. If you change the location, will whoever doesn't currently attend regularly start to because its at a different place? Will you lose people who currently regularly attend? Other then the initial spike in attendance you will see because of the novelty of the change, I'm not sure changing locations will make a large difference in who regularly attends.

Location: Roseland Park in Edina right off of Highway 62 and France Ave.
Why: It has grilling pits, a playground for kidlets, lots of parking, frisbee golfing, and if people are "adventurous" enough, a lake for swimming.
When: I believe the reason for a weekly meet during the week, especially on Wed, is so that some of us may get a little "break" to make the week seem shorter and the weekend longer. However, seeing as that may not work with most people's time tables, and weekends are kinda iffy with the others, we do the weekend following cars and coffee for our monthly. Then everyone else can do it on a weekday/weekly basis. I'm not trying to restrict people from coming, but it seems to me like the people who want it to be on weekends, are also the ones who want it to be a monthly meet. Whereas the rest of us, are fine and can meet up on a weekly basis, we're still going to want to do something.
Just my .02

I'M OFFENDED!
And honestly, the weekly meets don't have to go away. I think the big problem here is that we've sort of stagnated on the fact that it's Porkys EVERY Wed. I can only stand around so much and see the same 12 cars and hear the same bullshit and deal with the same drama for so many weeks before I just don't give a fuck anymore. I've stuck it out this long because I got shit else to do, but honestly, I am tired of that scene. Sure it was cool at first to see the parking lot load up and have it all be because we started something, but then, all the people we might like to see go away, and we're left with the riffraff.... no offense to anyones homies, but I can think of several occasions where I was like "WTF is this person doing here?" It's not even that it's an ethusiast of Mazda vs. enthusiast of Subaru/Evo/Honda/whatever, it's that it's enthusiast, vs. scummy dirtbag looking for street racing. Our own attitudes got the best of us. I don't want to sound elitist, because ultimately, I could really give a fuck who shows up where, and when.... but we've attracted some real characters as of late, and with some of the things that have already happened, it's only a matter of time before something serious happens and someone ends up hospital/jail/dead. And I don't know about anyone else, but that is not something I want on my head. Sure, people are responsible for their own actions, but no matter what- the minute someone says "Wed, Porkys, shit got real" SOMEONE is going to associate that with us. Sure that might be my paranoia talking, but it's my party now dammit, I can be paranoid if I want to.

That being said- I am NOT opposed to others with non-mazdas showing up. Hell, half the regular members here don't even have Mazdas anymore. But what I do not want is the elitist R/K or Eurowerks shit, where everyone bags on everyone else. You don't have to like someone elses car (I freely hate on Dookie's Si) but if it's genuinely well executed, or something different, or otherwise not a POS, we need to calm that shit down. We also need to focus on our core audience, which thusfar, has been Mazda. I know it doesn't seem like that makes a difference, but it has. We're also starting to get recognition as sort of the goto for anyone local, with mazda stuff. That article in the paper actually has gotten me a few phone calls from people asking questions and things of that nature, so the word IS out there. But instead of saying "Oh this sucks" or "that part is shit and you can only do it this way" and whatever else.... try and be supportive.

/rant- but anyhow, I think a BIG part of getting away from the negative image that we've garnered, and to reinforce the positive image, or what little of it we do have.

Tom, I would love to know who you're referring to as the riffraff. And also, who the scummy dirtbags who are only looking for street racing are.
From what I could tell, this past year as non of the older more "veteran" members were really able to show or just didn't want to, it seems like you are calling everyone that did come out this past year the riffraff.
Sure we all have our stupid tendencies, everyone does. You also have to remember, that we are there to have fun. Be goofy. And joke around with people we just want to be around.
Most of the people I can think of that came out this year that didn't have a Mazda, had at least some appreciation and support of all our cars.
If you want to make this a more selected club, go right ahead. But I will say, not even you're Eurowerks, turns myself, Jon, Krueger, or anyone else I have brought there away. Even though we don't own euros and we're a bit more, risque than the elder members.
I'm sorry if this club isn't what you want it to be, but if you truly want to be as big of a Mazda group as Eurowerks is a VW/Audi group, for the Mazda side anyways, you'll have to make everything kid friendly and tone it down a notch. I just, this is suppose to be a car enthusiast club correct? Then let's be enthusiasts. It sounds like what you want to do(and Erik could clarify if he came on here anymore), is have a miata.net for all Mazdas.

How can any of the senior members tell me how it was this past summer when the only one I really saw out there was Tom?
I don't think I met you, wanted to, but didn't. No wait, we did meet...on a random what was it Thursday where Tom wanted to take pictures.
Any of the other senior members, I didn't. And I would know as I think I missed one or two Wed.
