Beer and Brat feed! (and yes, an engine swap too)

Some of you know I will be putting a new(er) motor into the 3 next weekend. (Oct 16th and possibly the 17th) The exact time and location are still up in the air and open to suggestions. Basically, I need a place with all the tool and toys we might need. So far, the plan (if it is still cool with Jurgen) is to work in his smaller garage but any larger, properly equipped venue would be an improvement. I have access to an engine hoist.

Since I have never done this type of thing before (or anything remotely close to this complicated) I am offering food, homebrew or other beverages to anyone that would like to come and lend a hand and more importantly, some expertise. Let me know what you guys thinks and if you want to help out.

You might contact this place... they're a sponsor on MNAutox.com and have gotten good reviews over there. It's not free, but I bet they have everything you need and more.

That place wouldn't be a bad idea, assuming you're certain you can get it all done in a day. Full-day rate for a 2-post lift is $250, open bay is $200. Looks like they also include a tool kit as part of the rental, and have plumbing for air tools.

Getting everything done in a single day sounds pretty optimistic to me. Assuming everything goes without a hitch, I would probably budget a weekend until the car is driveable again.

I don't see any real need for a lift, as long as you can get your hands on an engine hoist. Hell a harbor freight engine hoist will do the job and cost you less than a few hours of rental at that place.

+1 Jay...place seemed pretty spendy unless you really knew what you were doing and just needed the facilities. I'd offer up my place, but I'm sure my wife would kill me if I committed our garage for a whole weekend with all of the Fall clean-up/maintenance we have left to do. I'll keep an eye on the thread though, and if I can lend a hand I'll swing by for sure.

Post up with any tools, ramps, jack stands etc that you might need for the project.

Apparently my mechanic never got my message to drop the car and stop working on it. He has it torn apart and parts on the way to his shop. Since I now already owe him $800, the engine swap this weekend is no longer needed. Sorry guys. I will be doing shocks and struts in a few weeks if anyone wants to help out with that. I will still bring some homebrew and food for any helping hands.

Shocks and struts are cake... sucks that you got honked on that deal... makes the guy sound more like he's shady tho....

He is a friend of a good friend of mine so I'm pretty sure he is good guy, but yeah, it sucks. I'm just trying to find a good deal on a set of speed suspension components. The 3 forums seem pretty picked over for that stuff right now.

Stock speed stuff is kinda junk. IT's a decent upgrade of a stock 3, but the shocks are prone to blowing seals and leaking all over the damn place. Stack a little cash in the corner and get Koni yellows and a decent set of Eibach springs. Not the cheapest solution, but one of the best.

How much do those affect ride height? I'm trying to keep it is as high as possible since I do drive her through the snow. I had a few issues of plowing the streets last year.

Depends. eibach prokit and koni yellows give ya about an inch, inch and a half. If you're having stuck problems, you need better snow tires. I've never gotten the MINI stuck and I guarantee it's lower than what that'd do to yo whip.

Close, but the FSD's aren't adjustable IIRC. That setup would be pretty minty tho.

Also, I had those Yokos on my old 3, right before I traded it lol, and they were pretty awesome.
