Damn, that sucks. At least she's OK, and just hit the deer instead of trying to swerve to avoid it (and end up rolling the car or something).

Agreed on all the above, plus hitting the deer is Comprehensive on the insurance, which means likely a lower deductible and that it does not count against you as a chargeable accident.

Everyone's good to go. I was driving and Jess and Ella were sleeping. It was right at midnight and a nice buck came out of the median running full bore and all I saw was a half second before impact. Jess woke up at the SLAM of the impact, but Ella slept right through it. The truck wasn't making any odd noises (rubbing) or anything, so we called it in to the sheriff's office and drove straight there to get an accident report written up. Turning right sounds bad and going over bumps rubs like crazy too. The radiator is cracked, so we're seriously limping to the auto body place. The important things are safe and we'll figure out the rest, hopefully today. Part of me is hoping for it to be totalled so we don't have to drive all the way (5hrs one way) out here to pick it up again, but the other part of me doesn't want to deal with buying another vehicle since Jess and I have always only had 1 car payment. My Subaru was paid off before we bought the Pilot, and the Pilot was paid off before we bought the Mazda. With Baby #2 on the way, an extra car payment would suck a lil' bit.

If the pilot is paid off, you should be able to get a chunk of cash out of the deal. Use that to pay off the mazda and then you'd only have one payment!

Also, did you keep the deer? Deer meat ftw! lol

Now that's some good thinking Dan!

I guess in Aberdeen the sheriff takes the deer to a shelter or something, so needy people get a bunch of fresh meat. It was 3 degrees out when we hit it, so it was well refrigerated...lol

Yeah, can't get much more fresh than that. Hopefully it was partially carved too, since it eviscerated your truck pretty easily.

Good amount of damage. When I was 18 I hit a dear going 90 mph in my 1990 626. Hit so hard the dear was chucked right clear off the road. I left black skid marks for like 100 feet. And the hood was crumpled like an accordian. My dad took a sledgehammer to the hood to "straighten' it out, and we rigged a hook so that the hood would stay closed. All you had to do was sit on it to open and close it.

^^^all 100% true. Car drove good for a few months after that, then it lost reverse so we just had to watch were we parked it, so we didn't have to push.

The truck's at the autobody place and we'll find out if it's fix-worthy or totalled late this afternoon. We also found out we have $40/day rental coverage on our auto insurance so thank God for that! It would not be cool to be paying $25-40 a day out of pocket for a rental for the next couple of weeks. If it's going to be fixed, I'm expecting about a 3 week wait, since Aberdeen, SD isn't exactly the foreign parts capital of the World.

So the totals just came in and the damage is between $9K and 9500, so it's being repaired rather than totalled out. So the only bad news is that we're going to have to make the 10hr round-trip drive back out here in a few weeks to pick it back up again, and hopefully it's done right, since it's not like we can be unhappy with any aspect of the repair without doing ANOTHER 10hr round-trip drive....ugh

On the upside, Jess has a brand new Rav4 for her rental and she really likes it, so that's cool. And we can rest assured that Jess' new tires and new oil change (done at 4pm yesterday) won't go to waste.
