Did an oil change on the speed3.

A few things of note on the oil change. So this time I had the mazda tool for the filter and it came off so smooth. Second thing is the filter looked like it was compressed a little causing beding of the fins(see pic). Anybody else see this bending on theirs?

There's a big thread on M3F about crushed filters; long story short, you don't need to worry about it. If it really bothers you, do the spin-on conversion.

It never happened to me, but like Colin said, the general consensus is that the filter media is not damaged, and it's nothing to worry about. Out of curiosity were you using the OEM mazda-branded filter?

I haven't read all of the thread colin mentioned, but I'm wondering if part of what causes the filter to get crushed is just the friction with the filter cap twisting the filter a bit as you screw it down.

This one was a fram filter. But the new one I put in was a mazda filter so tune in 3000miles down the road and to see if the same thing happens.

It's either the twisting while putting it in or the spring loading pressure on it and then the filter getting soaked in oil causing a minor crush.

Yep, crushing happens for me most of the time. Happened in my 2.3L 6 and in the Speed3. No worries.

For the record, I've never had a crushed filter, and I'm due for the car's 7th oil change (30k miles) soon. I've only used Mazda OEM filters, and a lot of the people in that M3F thread used aftermarkets. The guy who started the thread had it happen with a Purolator filter; he even went as far as to send the used filter back to Purolator for analysis, and they came back and said there was nothing to worry about.

This isn't the original thead, but it sums the issue up pretty well: http://www.mazda3forums.com/index.php?topic=75978.0

I'M OFFENDED!
The only one I did myself, I didn't see that. I'm almost due for another, we'll see where that gets me.

Crushing will never happen to me again.

Tim and I installed my screw-on oil filter conversion. Was a lot of fun and a lot of hot coolent running all over my garage floor. But its on and no leaks. WOOT.

Ive done 2 or 3 oil changes and a couple of them were like that. I used the purolator filter. I have that 10 mazda set with the wrench on order though :)
