Enabling ad-hoc networking on Android?

So, I have done a fair amount of reading on how to accomplish this, but a lot of the threads on android dev forums are pretty dense (to me anyhow). But I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience doing this, or is aware of a "best method"?

Phone is a Galaxy S Blaze (TMo) rooted, running honeycomb.

In case anyone is interested... there is zero 4G signal inside at work, the wireless routers in my area of the building were all upgraded to N, and the only G signal is a sketchy "visitor" router near the front desk. So I'd like to use my laptop as a hotspot.

I've done it before, but always through a usb cable. I'm guessing you want to do this wirelessly?

I am fine with making the modifications through a USB cable, but yeah, the goal would be to connect my phone to an ad hoc network setup on my laptop.
