Got Wood?

Ok, so I'm asking a serious question about decks. I need to take the makeshift deck/stairs off the back entry and I'm curious to know if anyone here would suggest a company for deck work. I need to remove mine, then build a new one after the garage goes up. IN the mean time I'll need some temp steps that a small child would likly injure themselves on. :pc:

My neighbor used to own his own construction framing company and is pretty much the Yoda of decks. He just put a new one on his place last Summer and built one for one of the other neighbors, and put one on his buddies house as a barter for a whole kitchen full of new cabinets (his buddy is a kitchen remodeler). I would highly recommend him and he's all about side jobs whenever they come up. His hourly rate is around $30 an hour, but he works fast and does really good work, so I definitely think he's worth it. ...just an option. If you're interested, I can certainly give you his name and number and you two can take it from there. And I definitely won't take it personally in any way if you don't go with him or whatever. Just throwing it out there because I've seen his work.

If YSOSLO's neighbor will make a deck for $30/hour call him NOW and book it. That's a steal for labor. All you would need to do is go look at his house and his neighbor's to see examples of his work. And if you like what you see hire him.

Deck companies charge outrageous rates and your situation seems like it would be pretty straightforward to build. So he's probably a great option.

Does he do design or anything? I want to be able to see what I'm going to pay for, and while I like a deal, I also like a company I can go back on for the quality of the work.

Agreed AJ, I need someone to widdle me up some stairs for an existing stairless deck too... so let me know what you end up doing.

I'll try to get some pics of his deck and the other neighbor's too so you can see what he's done around here. I'll PM you once I get them, so I don't have to try to upload them somewhere and then link to them on here. He's a 40ish year old guy who really knows his stuff, and his wife is our daycare provider (super nice to just walk across the street to drop our daughter off and pick her up). With the daycare at their house, his work is seen by parents that have to trust that their kids will be safe and there are no worries about that with the gates he put on the deck to keep kids from falling down the steps and stuff. He did the same type of thing on the other neighbor's house too, because the neighbor's deck is about 8 feet above the ground, so falls were a concern. I doubt he does any type of design but, like most carpenters, if you have a picture of what you're looking for, I'm sure he can make it happen. Like I said, I'll get the pics and PM you with them along with his contact info and you can do what you'd like one way or the other.

Here's a link to some pics of my neighbor Keith's handy work. The spindles are different on the 2 decks and one is obviously higher than the other. The reason they look similar is because the neighbor wanted his to look a lot like the one the Keith built on his own house.

pm me if any of you want his contact info. I've already sent his info to AJ.
