Help with car audio

So I'm trying to get my new WRX up to my MSP audio level. I went to Ultimate Electronics today and got a quote for a 10" sub with amp combo. Wow, there is lots to know. So its $150 for a sub, $200 for an amp, $50 for the box, $100 for the cables, and $50 for installation. Total = at least $550 for one little sub.

So I'm looking on craigslist. There are folks selling subs/amp combos for $200 on down. That saves me $200+ which is nice, and its probably better stuff than I looked at. But I don't know what is good sh*t and what is crap. I don't know if the combination of the components is right or not. Basically I'm clueless.

But, I refuse to pay $600 bucks for a sub...so...

Can anyone help me out here? Maybe take a quick look on craigslist and tell me what would be a good deal, or give other suggestions. Thanks for any help.

well first of all...100 bucks is a lot for cables...you can get brand new monster cables for $50 at best buy. second of all...do it yourself man, $50 bucks in your pocket...and for a 10 inch sub you don't need a hell of a lot of power...a 1000 watt peak amp should do the job...
I'm not a pro by anymeans...so if i'm wrong here..please let him know...just kind of going off of my expeierence....as for the box...prolly a pretty decent deal..you could get one off ebay but you ahve to pay shipping...so! and ebay you can get some good subs...i've done it twice and have nothing but good thigns to say...maybe a 10" type R with a 1000w kenwood amp? my buddy has the setup of two 12" Type R's with a 1200w kenwood...could use more power..but thumps like hell..
hope this helps..

basically this is what I'm talking about...

"I'm selling my 2 12 inch pioneer subs in sealed box and magna bass 500 watt rms 1000 peak amp for 160 or best offer. Subs are wired down to 2 ohms and the shit pounds . Sounds great still hooked up in car so you can hear befor you buy. If interested call Anthony at..."

That's more than I need, but whatever, you get the idea. I would do anything from 1 10" to 2 12's.

This "sounds" like a killer deal. $160 for TWO 12's! Boxed and ready to go. But I don't know?

Wiring is $50 for cables and $30ish for the battery cables? didn't really know what the dude was talking about. So that's were I got the $100.

1. Sub setups being sold on CL or eBay are going to be in the same condition as the subs you'll see at a pawn shop...beat to hell if not blown. People with good setups don't sell them.

2. $100 is not uncommon for cables, at least not from Ultimate since they sell mostly Monster stuff. You can get a StreetWires or Scoche kit from Crutchfield for like $30-40. In a kit you'll get a long 4 or 8 gauge cable with fuse holder that goes from the battery to the amp, a shorter 4 to 8 gauge cable for the amp ground, a long pair of RCA cables, and a long 16 to 18 gauge wire for the remote turn-on lead (if the RCA pair doesn't have one molded in already).

3. How much bass do you want? You can pick up an Infinity BassLink like I have for about $200, and that has a 10" woofer, 10" passive radiator, and built-in 200W amp, and the whole thing takes up less room than just a single-driver 10" box would.

4. Don't pay someone to install it. There are plenty of folks here, including myself, who would be happy to help you install it.

Right...just as ebay always is...it depends on the seller...i got two brand new 12 type r's for a decent price and both were in brand new perfect condition...but it goes both ways! and yeah not worth the install price!

The Story Teller....
I agree Colin... Dont buy subs on CL... Bad News Bears.

I have a single 10" MTX in a nice small enclosure with a 200 watt clarion amp in my Si and its more then I need. Im just running it off of my factory deck too. I would avoid going with some huge bulky box, I cant justify losing space in my trunk just to make my car rattle to shit.

You could get a 10" Alpine TypeR 4ohm DVC for about $110 new on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-ALPINE-SWR-...ures?hash=item4a9ab72c9b&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

A MRP500 Amp for $150ish (500w RMS @ 2ohms which is what you'd be able to wire that 4 ohm DVC sub to)
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Alpine-MRP-...iers?hash=item3ca5d2a66e&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Decent wiring kit for $30 or so w/ shipping

Then either build a box or pick one up locally and you are set. I had a single 12" Type R in my Mz6 in a ported box and it was MORE than loud enough for me, granted a sealed 10 won't be quite as much but I still think it would do you fine.

If you're looking for door speakers, I've got a pair of 5-1/4" apline component speakers and a pair of 6-1/2" alpine coaxial speakers I'd let go cheap.

From NASIOC:
"the front doors take 6.5" speakers, but have such a shallow clearance to the window that most aftermarket speakers won't fit stock. Also, Subaru provides 3 mounting screw holes at 120 degree spacing, while almost all aftermarket speakers have 4 screws at 90 degree spacing. The typical solution to these problems is to install a spacer ring (typically 0.5" thick), attaching it to the door w/3 screws, and attaching the speaker to the ring with 4 screws. The "upgraded speaker" option seems to come with a plastic mounting ring that may solve some of these problems.
The rear doors take 4" speakers stock, but since the hole in the metal is larger, some have successfully mounted 5.25" speakers, again using a custom spacer/mounting ring."

so... if they fit, I'd probly take them.

EDIT: forget it. After some searching at NASIOC there is way too much debate on speaker size, fit, ect. I'm not touching the speakers unless they blow. Yikes.

Tell ya what. They are just sitting in my garage right now, so if you want you can take them, play around with how the fit and whatnot. If you decide to keep them... $35 for a pair or $60 for both pairs. If not, as long you didn't hack em up, I'll take em back.

If you're not gonna touch the doors, NBD, I'll probably find a use for them eventually. lol

I'll take them at that price. I'll figure out a way to make them work.

Cool. I got the crossovers for the 5-1/4" speakers half-installed in the festiva, so I'll try and get those yanked this weekend.
