I'm posting this here to limit the amount of people that see it. My ChumpCar team (made up of 2 guys I autocross with and another friend of ours) is participating in the race at BIR in two weeks, then again in the 24 hour race on June 26-27 at Iowa Speedway in Newton, IA. We are considering adding 1 or 2 more drivers to the team for the 24 hour race. We have 5 so far, but I haven't heard of any teams using less than 6.
Before thinking that you want to do it you need to know that there will have to be some money spent on your part.
Safety gear: SA2000 or better helmet, neck brace (foam, Hutchens or HANS), full SFI 3.2/A- or FIA 8856-2000-certified fire-retardant driving suit, fire-retardant FIA- or SFI-rated socks, racing gloves and shoes
There are a couple places that you can get a full multilayer suit setup for around $500, http://cs-gear.com/ and http://www.profoxracing.com/, an SA helmet will run you around $250 on the low end.

Race costs: $100 driver fee (per race), $50 for competition license and $25 for driver school (one time fees), lodging, food, transportation costs, fuel, etc.
Our car is a 1985 MR2, it will be painted in Ricky Bobby Wonder Bread livery and our team name is Team Shake and Bake. The car was just at the autocross test and tune last weekend to get beat on a little bit. Had a couple issues to iron out but overall it's working great. We have a fair amount of time and money into the car and have been meeting at least once a week for the past few months to wrench on it. You'd be driving a car that has already been prepared and the only thing left to do is maintenance.
