Mirror mod- GO!

I'M OFFENDED!
So, everyone has heard my bad idea by now. I want to hide mazdaspeed logos in my mirrors in my turn signals so they light up when I hit the turn signals. Not terribly legal, but badass nonetheless. Anyhow, tonight it got started. Courtesy of MSPWillie (Kyle) I was gifted with 4 9x12 sheets of two way bronzed mirror glass. He then proceeded to cut me a pair of mirrors to get my start, and gave me a glass cutter (AWESOME) and the template for my mirrors, so I can theoretically make two more sets should I be so inclined. I test painted a piece of scrap to make sure it would work, and this is going to kick ass when it gets done. Next on the list is to find a suitable LED strip, (maybe even multicolored should I feel so inclined) wire it up to my side mount turn signals, and get it all tucked into the factory mirror location. After that, it's a matter of getting a set of reverse cut vinyls, and painting around them on the mirrors, so only the logo part is see thru. And then, it's ON. Hopefully this turns out as cool as I hope it will. Pics as soon as I locate my camera.

Oh there is a will.

Update#1- sanding glass is hard. BUT, I should be able to get a nice polished edge on these, and then, onto paint.

sounds interesting. do you mean the mazda logo or 'mazdaspeed' spelled out?
either way, something different than having a blinking arrow on your mirror.

This could be interesting. I wonder if you could sell these on 247 or something...

EDIT: You could probably also sell them on msf.org.... just get PTPerformance to claim it will improve throttle response or something, and you'll sell a million.

Just say 'YOU NEED THESE MIRRORS OR YOUR MOTOR WILL BLOW!!!'

It works for him.

I could probably sell them if I did it right, but I want to make sure the final product is worthy of sale before I get that far.

exactly. As long as the LEDs inside the mirror weren't outrageously bright, or an obnoxious color, I can't imagine any cop in the world caring.

I would go with "not terribly illegal" lol

Small update- I bought some diamond bits at HF the other day to try and get the rest of the grinding/sanding knocked out. They worked awesome, especially for 7$. The only problem is, my dremel is way too fast for the application, and as it was teh cheapz0r dremel (15$ NEW at the pawn shop) there is no adjustable speed. So now I have a bunch of itty bitty little chips around the edges. I don't think this will affect the final product, as I'm going to try and use the factory glass surrounds and that *should* cover up any remaining imperfections. I tested the theory of the paint on the back holding out the light... and while black worked quite well, I do believe I am going to acquire a can of chrome and try that, see if I can't pick up a little more reflectiveness before I proceed that far. Now I just need to source a set of decals and I'm set. The lighting aspect will be even easier than I anticipated..... at the advice of Parnell (who amazingly, didn't think this was a shit idea) I am going to get some EL strips and cut them to fit. This should allow me to affix the light source directly to the back of the mirror with minimal modification, and avoid having hotspots from my light source. Now I just need to get to a PC mod shop and see if they'll let me test the glass on it.

Another update....

We're at a bit of a standstill. I finally got around to pulling one of the factory mirrors out of the housing. I broke the glass in the process, which was dumb and hence my WTB thread. BUT- it gave me a chance to check fitment. And the result is.....

The glass is way too thick. The glass from the factory is this chintzy thin BS (How does this crap not break more often?) and the stuff that Kyle got for me is like, windshield thick. So what I'm going to have to do is procure another set of glass surrounds and try and not fuck those up when I grind out the inside to be able to fit the thicker glass in there. Stay tuned kids!
