How much do you know on the custom box side of things? I wouldn't mind doing a slim box across the back seats in the truck on my MS6 with the box housing 1 12", the amp and cap. I don't really want to get rid of the stock deck though.

I've built a couple custom boxes, what you are describing doesn't sound too hard to do. Once you decide on a sub you have to figure out if you want ported or sealed, and then design the box based on that (different subs are going to like different sized boxes). Some subs do really well in sealed or ported, some are fine in either. Ported is generally louder, and a bit more 'boomy' depending on the sub, sealed isn't quite as loud but is usually tighter bass.

By using a line converter you can splice into the speaker wires (or stock sub wire if you have one) to get a signal, that converts the high level signal to a low level (RCA) signal that you can plug into your new sub amp. I had a 10" and amp installed in my 6 before I replaced anything, just unhooked the stock sub and put that in place, worked out pretty well.

What are you thinking about getting as far as sub/amp goes?

The sub I'd prefer would be a brand new RF Series 1. But Since that doesn't generally become very much of an option I really don't know. I've been out of touch for a while on the audio shit. I'm a guy who likes shit to flow well, look good, and sound great. Has to like bass often forund with Bone Thugs and such. I'd prefer one AMP to power everything down the road. I also don't want overkill or want to spend a ton, but I won't go cheap either. Can I be any more complicating.

By RF Series 1 I am guessing you are talking about the Rockford Fossgate Stage 1? Looks like crutchfield has a 12" 4ohm version of that sub for about $60, Rated at 50-100w RMS, so an amp to power that wouldn't set you back too much, I wouldn't worry about getting a cap for that small amount of power draw, it won't hurt though.

If your planning on replacing speakers / head-unit / amp then you could either go with a 5 channel amp for everything or a mono amp for the sub and a 4 channel for the speakers, if your keeping the stock system other than the sub then all you would need is a mono amp (or a 2 channel that you can bridge) that will put out ~100w RMS @ 4ohms, I can look later and see whats available for amps that would work, Alpine makes some pretty good quality inexpensive amps.

What does making a box generally cost these days? Thinking that the speaker will be exposed outside the box.

A box for 1 12 shouldn't be too bad, figure a sheet of MDF is around $30, $20 for Sealer, Screws, etc should be plenty, then whatever you want to cover it with, paint, carpet, vinyl, etc.

Your going to mount the driver inverted with the basket facing out? That'd be cool, I did that with my first ever install that was in my truck back in highschool, pics were part way through the install process but gives you an idea.

I'd certainly be willing to help out. I don't really have a place to do the work anymore or the tools, when I built that one my Grandfather had his woodshop still, really all you need is a skill saw, jigsaw, some clamps, and a drill. Table saw makes things go fast though. It's been a while since I've done a custom box but I wouldn't mind giving it a try again.

For my truck I started by making a template of the floor of the cargo area in my using Tagboard, then measured out some other dimensions like how high the wheel wells were, how far the seat came out at X height, etc. Then I drew up the plans. The design work and planning goes a long way to speeding things up when you go to build it, and helps make the best use of the MDF. Part I still suck at is carpeting, if its just a retangular / square box its not bad, angles kill me though.

Anyway snap some pics of the inside of a 3 and let me know what your thinking of doing, maybe I can come up with something.

:threadjacked: Fuck'n 3 owners, make your own thread! :fish'D: LOL j/k

Well if I came up with the tools and work space (my garage) or some other location, I'd be interested in getting some work done as well. I'm going to see if I can find some specific items I might want to use and get your opinion on them and how they would work together.
