New Garage Options

We are in the process of getting a bid for a new garage. Approx 24 x 40 something (960 sq ft) and while we have some ideas I thought this would be another good place to post for things to possibly consider for options.

Things to consider:

- 4 car tandem with 2 single doors.
- can't be higher than our house
- will be using a roof style to allow for 5 foot high storage height in the center
- going to ask about in floor heat yet

Feel free to toss out any ideas you think we should look into

Put a lift in that thing, or even a pit, in one of the spaces. Other things to consider..... plumbing with a big laundry sink is great to have for cleaning rags, parts ETC. Also, maybe a washer/dryer out there, so you don't fuck up the one in the house.

The basics: Workbench, Compressor, good lighting... Also look into insulation. With good insulation you can heat the thing with something as simple as a propane heater. I would stay away from heated floors, too much money for an area you will never walk on bare-footed.

I dont think they are buliding it tall enough for a lift...

I won't be putting in a lift, I don't have a need for that. That, and I think we will have the whole thing with a ceiling. We talked about a water supply out there and with the 2 faucets on either side of the house and close kitchen access we don't want that either. Again, steady supply of dirty rags are not in the mindset. That could change however based on what our plumbing cost to get it out there might end up being.

Yeah, good point. A good compressor will be invaluable. Get one of those giant ones that sears sells or something, and get multiple lines put in, so you have quick access to air in the entire garage w/o having to have a compressor/hose there. Great idea is to put it in the ceiling, so it's out of the way, or even put a little shed over it and leave it behind the garage.

My parents just rebuilt their cabin up north and put heated floors in the basement. For most of the winter it's enough to keep the whole cabin heated. So, if you insulated the walls that's probably the only heat source you'd need for a garage.

But it's not cheap...

Taya says that her parents put heated flooring in the chicken coop and in the workshop, and let me tell you, that workshop is MONEY in the winter.
