New laptop computer help needed

Agreed, AJ. I have a deal through my work on Dell, but I had a better deal on a returned never used laptop sold through Dell Outlet than buying a new one.

I disagree on the Vista statement. I run Vista Premium on my laptop and could not be happier with the performance of it. The system requirement is 1gig of RAM, but I run 4 gigs, so I am sure that helps.

Pete, if you decide to give up on the old laptop, let me know... I might be interested in taking it off your hands. /offtopic

I run Vista Ultimate at home and at work with no issues, 2GB RAM on a Core 2 Duo at work, 4GB at home, runs great. Yes, it has its quirks, but there are work-arounds and once you get used to it you'll probably like it. XP was the same way when it came out, way different than 95/98, and Vista is very different from XP. I wouldn't run it with less than 4GB, but don't bother running 64-bit unless you absolutely need more than 4GB RAM for an application. (32-bit operating systems have a physical memory limit of 4GB.)

At work we use nothing but IBM/Lenovo desktops and laptops. I touch them every day and love them, would highly recommend them to anyone. Their support is top notch as well, and I've dealt with many computer companies. Dell is the other recommendation I would make. I'd be weary of buying anything else.

Thanks for mentioning the 64-bit thing Matt. I noticed most of the more expensive laptops specifically mentioned having 64-bit Vista, but had no idea what it was about. So basically what you're saying is the typical home user that isn't using a CAD program or something that's extremely RAM intensive should never really need to worry about getting the 64-bit version?

I'll have to say watch out for the XPS 1330 laptops. I had to get the motherboard replaced because it would randomly not turn on and a dell tech that came out said hes been replacing a lot of them. I didn't ask him if other models were like this...

As for the 64-bit version of Vista, thats what I use on my HP laptop and it runs flawlessly. And my HP is by no means a high-end computer.

Check out the HP EliteBook 2530p, it's Mil-Spec. You can bring that sucker in to battle.
