Project LAG

Most of you know I've been working on finishing off the garage in the place I bought this spring, and since AJ posted his Big Ass Garage (BAG) thread I decided I'd follow suit and post a thread about Project LAG or Little Ass Garage. I know it's not actually tiny but for a 2 car it's a little tight, and it seems tiny compared to that monster AJ built lol.

So far I haven't gotten all that much done, and my camera is crap so I haven't taken a lot of before/in progress shots, but I'll post what I can and try and take more pictures as I go.

The garage had the drywall up and was insulated when I bought it, but the mud work had not been done so I started with that. I had never done any of that before so it was a bit of a learning experience. Once I got the seams and nail / screw holes covered up I sanded it down and threw up a primer coat. Finally came the paint, I went with dark gray on the bottom and white up top and on the ceiling, I seperated the gray and white with a red stripe which you can see in process in the pictures below, I didn't think to prime/paint that area before going with the red, which I think was a mistake which I'm working on fixing right now, also I bought a quart can of Glidden Everlast for the red, very unimpressed with that paint and I likely won't buy it again.

Final thing I've gotten (mostly) taken care of is the floor. I was going to go with an Epoxy Sealer (epoxy coat) however I was a little hesitant due to the amount and importance of the prep work to make sure it adheres to the floor, even a small spot that isn't etched correctly or has some oil or other contaminate can cause the epoxy not to stick. I think the end result if done properly is pretty awesome and provides the best protection, but it also carries some significant risks.

I came across a pretty good deal on the tile systems (Similar to RaceDeck) at www.bigfloors.com I used their floor designer and came up with something I liked so I went ahead and ordered it. Went with the GarageDeck style floor. I placed my order on a Monday morning and received the product Friday of the same week.

The tiles ship assembled into 2x2 squares and it just so happend my design called for a majority of the floor to be done with 2x2 sections, so this reduced the amount of time I had to spend pulling tiles apart and snapping them in. All in all it took me about an hour and a half to sweep the garage out and lay all the tiles down. I still have a row along the right wall that needs to be cut and installed. You can cut the tiles with a table saw or scroll saw is what I've been told, so I'll post my experiences with that when I get there.

Next projects will be installing additional lighting, possibly some more electrical outlets, and some storage for things like brooms, hoses, ramps, etc.

You think you have a little-ass garage? My 1-car garage is so small, when the car is in the garage you can't open the passenger doors.

Looks awesome. It's been a LONG time since I've seen a garage not will with a ton of random crap.

Props for keeping it clean!

Lookin good so far! Looks like you need to lay down a stripe of red tinted primer, or even a light grey beneath the red stripe and repaint that, and you'll be good.

I'm looking forward to the day when I can put some time and money into my garage as well. Right now it's the stereotypical "full of random crap" garage that andy was referring to. lol

Thanks for the kind words. It looks so bare/clean as the stuff I do have is all piled in my house right now, and a bunch of stuff is still at my parents place. Cabinets and shelving is on the list for this winter probably so I hope to keep it clean and organized even once 'stuff' starts going back into it.

Good call on the Tinted primer Jay, that's just what I was thinking today.

Anyone have recommendations or suggestions on Cabinets and storage? The Closetmaid Garage Cabinets seem pretty decent for the money, I was hoping to find something that was metal but so far everything I've come across is either cheap junk or $$$$

Metal cabinets can be tricky, mostly because it costs so much to get good ones. Just like you can get an inexpensive craftsman tool chest, but it feels like junk compared to the expensive ones.

IMO, I'd leave the spendy metal stuff to professional shops and just go for something that looks decent and isn't total crap. I forget which line Home Depot carries (probably the rubbermaid stuff), but those looked reasonable for the money.

looks sweet! Garage-warming party time!

what else are you going to do with the walls? i see the dealership hangings, so were you thinking a mural of sorts? Or a photo collage?

While definitely not the size of AJ's, I would consider the garage a generous 2-car rather than a skimpy 2-car (our garages are the same size, just shaped a little different).

Just like I'm probably too worried about stuff getting under the tile, I think you're likely too worried about the prep needed for the paint to stick...

It's not really about the paint sticking.... if you look at the red stripe, you can clearly see where the grey and white meet up behind the red, causing it to look like two drastically different shades.

Red is a notoriously bad color for coating over other colors.

Jay, painting the floor. I'm eventually going to paint my floor because I'm paranoid about gunk under the tiles and not really having the floor sealed and protected. Matt went with tiles because he was concerned about the prep needed to make the paint stick.

Matt try going to a local cabinet maker and talking to them about some used cabinets. They will often just toss them away or reuse some things. They may also have some stuff that was damaged or made wrong. You can then replace the woud doors with pliewood or and cover that with a metal skin (that stuff is very cheap). But that would be a lot of sweat equity to put into a project.

PS never buy that crap at Lowes/Homedepot. I have worked with it and it is crap. You would be better off just getting racks and rubbermaid containers.
