Selling your stock catalytic converters?

Just to let you know I posted my stock cats on craigslist, $130 for both (MSP has 2 cats). They have been sitting in my garage for too looong. I was holding them in case I sold the car and decided to put them back on, but that wasn't happening.

I got a great response and they sold VERY quickly, just so you know people are really interested in mazda/import cats and they are valuable, so if you don't need them you can get good money if they are just taking up space.

I believe I priced mine too cheap actually for the amount of response, and checking prices on ebay. So if you want some cash and have stock cats sitting around, get rid of them, or keep them as prices are only going up.

Hmm, I sold my midpipe on 247 for about $90 to my pocket last fall. I knew the catalysts were relatively valuable metal, but I had no idea they could be recycled for that much cash. Good to know!

Yeah, I get 2-3 calls a week at work about stolen cats. They are a very hot item right for the crooks as well.

I don't think the forum recognizes it as a picture unless the url ends in .jpg or .png, etc...

Fixed it for ya.

Aren't they a hot item because Platinum is used in them? I believe thats why they get stolen all the time. I remember seeing some news story about thieves targeting trucks because they were the easiest to climb under and quickly chop the cat out.

Yes, I see it frequently on Ford/Chevy work vans. Like the E250s and 2500 series vans. Sometimes that will hack just the essentials out, but other times I have had shops replace full exhaust systems due to greedy/stupid crooks.

Word to that, nothing like a $1800 repair to a 4 year old econoline van that has 200k on the clock because someone wanted some metal!

these were actually sold to a guy who was shipping them to Montana for his son, he said that he crashed his car and had to get them replaced in order to cross the Canadian border (as they check all vehicles for them), he also told me that there are NO MAZDA DEALERSHIPS IN ALL OF MONTANA!!!! Crazy.

Two things I didnt know... I cant believe no Mazda dealer in all of Montana, thats crazy. And I had no idea they checked for cats when crossing the border. Good thing I never brought any of my DSMs across the border. :rock2:

I would think it's less that you can't cross the border, and more that getting a canadian car registered in the US requires an inspection for compliance with US emissions and safety standards.

I'm sure if you are at Niagra falls they aren't checking cars for cats, but the guy said that it is popular for cars to have no cats up there in Montana so the boarder guards check all the time.
