Tapping into factory navigation system video input (first gen Mazda3)

Seeing as how not having updated maps makes for a pretty useless GPS, I'd like to make use of the pop-up screen as a DVD player/hook up a SNES/whatever else.. Just being able to convert the video input to a simple composite video input would be great; I've already added auxmod, so I could easily pick up a 3.5mm jack to RCA cable for the audio.

Anyone good with electronics or have info? I'm not seeing much useful info here/Mazda3 forums or mazdas247.

Much thanks in advance.

There's a guy who used to frequent the forums named Zerocool who had done a lot of work with the factory stereo. I don't know if he did anything with the Nav system or not, but it might be worth sending him a PM to see if he knows, if he even replies.

I have a little hatch just to the left of the NAV that houses the GPS info on a SD Card. What year 3 do you have?

EDIT: I just noted the (firstgen). not sure where they are on the Gen 1s as I've got a GenPoo.

Yeah I don't recall seeing an SD card slot anywhere. Do I not have enough posts to search for users, or how can I be sure sending a PM to "Zerocool" will even work?

I emailed TvandNav2go and they have a kit to make 2 inputs for $200....

Garmin GVN52 or GVN53 may be of interest to you. That's what I used for my aftermarket pop-up screen in my 3.

I don't want/need a navigation system; I just want to be able to use the screen as a monitor for a DVD player or the like.

I know right, but it's more expensive than the kit I found to just modify the stock unit. Any chance you'd be interested in some sort of trade with the stock unit? Or maybe someone else would be interested in it?

Did you have rearview camera hooked up? If so, how'd you go about doing that?

I didn't have a rear view camera, and I'm good on Mazda parts. Your kit is $200 and I'm selling for $300, I'd split the difference and go $250?

I think if I'm going to replace the entire unit, I'd like to see what I can get for the stock one. I need to do some more research.
