And as an additional comment - do your research, nobody is forcing anyone to buy the game. If you don't like the fact that it requires an internet connection then move on to something else, it's far from the first game to require it and I can promise it won't be the last.

You can play 100% by yourself, you just need to have an active internet connection.

I don't 'think' you can trigger a disaster on a city you do not control, however if you are running a polluted, or crime-ridden city, it can affect the neighboring cities. You have to invite or allow someone to build a city in your region though. Side note: I'm installing the game as we speak!
