2010 MS3 Intake

So I purchased a Cobb SRI for my MS3 but have found out that Cobb is moving locations and orders are backed up 6 weeks. The person running the shop I ordered mine from mentioned the Injen CAI as an option. It nets more HP and he is willing to give me a good deal given the backup on Cobb intakes. The Cobb was $175….the Injen retails for $275 and I think he is going to give it to me for $200 shipped.

I was wondering if anyone has personal experience with the Injen intakes? How hard to install? Good/Bad for Minnesota driving? Is it really better than the Cobb? Legal?

Thanks!

Injen is the same as the MazdaSpeed branded CAI you can get from dealers. It's worked fine, but they did have issues with whacky a/fr readings so they added an 'air straightener' with their kits to help eliminate turbulence and get more consistent and equal air flow so the MAF was happy. If you go this route check with Cobb and make sure they have this air straightener.

CAI's are fine if you get a pre-filter with it. Otherwise, there's been cases of people hydrolocking their engines going through minor and major puddles and destroying their motors. I had one for a year with no issues. No one here's had issues. It's rare, but it happens. Get a prefilter and you should be fine.

If you don't even want to deal with the possibility of one, get the SRI. You won't notice the decreased hp and it's easier to maintain and work on when needing to clean the filter. Most people here are running the Cobb SRI with very happy results and reviews.

Horsepower ratings are junk per reviews. With the ms3, there is no discernable difference between an SRi and a CAI. Case in point- dyno'd my car with a CP-E SRi and an identically bolted car with an MS CAi and they put down identical numbers. I'd save myself the cash, and get an SRi and some sort of BPV, because if they're still using the one from the 1g ms3, those things are JUNK.

Just to clarify, those prefilters don't do a thing to prevent hydrolock. They just help keep the filter clean, and keep your MAFS dry because small splashes or sprays of water roll off the plastic prefilter instead of soaking into the filter element. From what I've seen, at least 90% of the "OMG I HYDROLOCKED MY MOTOR" threads are just someone who got some water through the MAFS and temporarily threw their ECU into limp mode.

But if you're at all worried about the possibility of hydrolock (and it takes a good amount of water to do that) just skip the CAI and get a SRI. The difference is pretty minor (if even measurable) on most turbo cars anyways.

The only thing I can tell you is an SRi is more susceptible to heat soak, being that it's all up in the engine bay. But from personal exp. the TMIC will rob you of power long before hot air will.

Thanks for the assistance guys! After waiting two months for Cobb to actually send me my intake, I got it installed (very simple) and am 100% pleased with it.

Next question, when picking a BPV, any suggestions? What are the main differences?

Well, don't get a BOV, but I'm guessing you knew that since you asked about BPV. That said... the forge makes mario coin sounds... <.<

I looked at the Forge site and found quite a few different ones w/o much of a description. Any chance you can provide a link to which one you are talking about? ;)

FYI, there are two versions of the Forge BPV now, version 1 makes "mario coin" sound. Version 2 does not. Look up MS3 BPV on youtube and see which one you prefer.

I'm running the HKS SSQV in recerc mode, love it, has a nice sound, loud enough to still hear it, but not so loud its obnoxious

^ Heard it's a great piece, but for the cost there's plenty of other options that do the same thing for half the price. I'd say if you can find a used one go that route.

Ya know, since you SAW my car last night, did you hear the BPV? I know it pinged when I got into the clutch so I didn't have to rear end that bus.
