#4 Motor Mount Bolt BENT

So I have had some sloppiness in my shifter since day one of owning this car and have always complained about it.

Recently there as been some "knocking" noises coming from the engine/transmission when the clutch was engaging in R,1st,2nd,3rd. Also when pressing the gas and letting off quickly in each gear.

Turns out that my #4 motor mount (The one located on the transmission) bolt was BENT. The bolt had not backed out at all, but was only bent.

I had the motor mount recall done about a year ago, but at the time they only torqued and marked the bolt. This time the bolt itself was actually replace.

The change is night and day in the shifter and clutch engagement. Like getting a brand new car. I'll continue to QQ for a few more weeks about, but wanted to share the info. I have never heard of this before only the complete mount failure.

Can you clairify a little. There are only 3 engine mounts I believe: passenger (top of engine), driver (top of tranny) and lower (bottom of tranny). I assume your talking about the drivers mod, cause thats the one in TSB??

I'M OFFENDED!
I'm assuming he is, because a lot of what he was/is complaining about was present in my car just before it failed.

Driver side. Top of Tranny. According to Mazda's recall and Morrie's tech it is the #4 mount.

I still haven't found a diagram to confirm.

The mount situation in these cars is spooky, I'm glad I replaced the rear mount but I'm half tempted to swap the others. Glad they got it replaced before any major damage happened.

Guess I need to take a closer look at this engine and find that 4th mount...

Since apparently no one else can manage this... I looked in the service manual.

Interestingly, there is a No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 engine mount, but there does not appear to be a No. 2.

The section relating to engine mounts can be found at 1-10A-30.

It looks like the No. 1 engine mount is the one underneath the center/rear of the engine. It looks like the one that is typically replaced most often.

I'm not too familiar with the where the others are, but it looks like the No. 3 engine mount is the one on the left (when facing the car) of the engine bay, on top of the engine and the No. 4 engine mount is below it on the bottom of the engine.

#3 is the passenger side mount, yes. It's equally prone to failure (just do a search on M3F about failed motor mounts), but when it goes there's much less risk of the engine falling out of the car than with the other two mounts.
