Hello all. Just woke up from nap. I got home with the car a little after 8am, so it was a LOOONG night. I think when the owner said it was "babied" he meant "thrashed" LOL. It was not babied.

BOTTOM LINE: I LOVE IT! So how does it compare to my MSP? It doesn't. I honestly have to say I'm in love! The only thing I miss about the MSP is the stereo. Otherwise this car is lunatic fun!

So I meet the dude at the airport. Even at night, I can see the car is not exactly "clean". Don't get me wrong, there is a lot about this car that I love, but for all the nice big things, there is a little thing that pisses me off.

The guy said it only has an exhaust, and "little things"...The car is pretty damn modded. I will have to work with the Subi guys to determine all the mods. I'm not taking pics until its at least somewhat cleaned up. Here are the mods (THAT I'VE FOUND SO FAR: some are great, some are not good:
Full TBE
CAI
BOV
Big upgrade TMIC
VERY nice Passport boost, oil temp, water temp gauges with peak memory (in the clock/pod location)
hood prop struts
HIDS
Integrated radar detector
Viper alarm (not installed well)
Spray painted (not well) gold stock rims
Stickers/vinyl galor
A pretty nice CF roof spoiler (like the stock 05-07 STI's have) It looks goofy to me, but its a nice piece that I might have to sell
STI wing
Access Port (not installed, looks new)
Momo shift knob with I'm guessing short shifter
JDM tail lights
clear corner/blinkers
clear headlights
BIG hood scoop

Like I said, I don't know everything. I'll have to do some investigating to find it all.

Now all the little things that erk me:

He's got the black rubber/plastic sideskirts in the car...said he was going to paint them body color white, but never got around to painting them OR apperantly putting them back on the sides of the car.

The Viper alarm is installed poorly, looks dumb, the keys had low battery and wouldn't work, AND the drivers door lock is jammed from lack of use, so you have to unlock the passenger side with the key and unlock the doors. I didn't replace the battery to the keys yet, so I don't know how well they work.

The rims are painted poorly, and the car was dirty. I don't really mind either of these too much. the rims will be winter rims...so, meh.

The HIDs are not bi-xenon, so there are not high beams

The car was louder than I anticipated. It has a 6 disc changer, but I didn't bring any CD's and had to listen to the radio the whole way. When reception was bad the drone of the exhaust began to wear on me over the course of the 8 hour trip. That is why I miss the MSP stereo.

But the car is tons of fun. Exactly what I wanted. Great price too. I bonded with the car over the journey back from Chicago and its a great runner. When you step on the gas and get that rush of power the MSP just didn't have. That Subi exhaust note! I'm going to really enjoy this car. The best part about it is that it has the mods I would want, so I will have to spend my money on rims and cleaning the car up a bit. That's nice. Its going to take a while to get the car "sorted out", but all in all, this was a good deal.

Im sure the guy who just sold a mazda and bought a subaru is going to be incredibly scared of threats of being banned on a Mazda site coming from a non-moderator...

I suppose after a one-way flight to Chi-town you weren't really in a position to negotiate the price down after finding it in less-than-desired condition....makes it tough to walk away, but it sounds like that might have been what would have happened had it been seen here in the metro. Hopefully it holds up well for you. Should be a sweet looking ride once you get 'er back together and in shape.

Well thats kinda why I wanted that one. The price was low enough that I could put some money into fixing some "issues". The exterior or the car won't be really bothered with 'cause I don't really care about little scratches and a ding. I'll inspect it for issues and decide on what I want to put my money into. I'm still very happy with the car, its just not what I expected. I expected basically stock in nice shape, I got modded up in less nice shape. Works for me.

^ Wise words. OpenECU >>>>> AP for the Subie crowd.

Kinda surprised the guy wasn't honest about the mods. Seems like you got a decent deal, pending condition of the car and what not. Bring it up to GrimmSpeed in St. Paul and they'll tell you every detail about the car inside and out - they're a great Subie shop.

Well I put the side skirts on this morning, got it registered. I didn't know you had to pay sales tax, so that sucked. Now I'm setting up an appointment with MAP to look over the car, make suggestions, and I'll go from there.

A few things...

Head over to MNSubaru and see what those guys suggest for tuning (both software and tuner). As for MAP... having spoke to there tuner before, I don't think I'd want him tuning my WRX. He seems to straight up hate Subarus and last I checked they hadn't done much if any tuning using the AP. RS might be a better solution.

Not many ppl use CAI on a WRX, in fact of all the subie owners I know all rock Short Ram. From what I have been told "the bend in the CAI f--ks with the MAF due to its location and it doesn't meter correctly". You might want to investigate that before a tune is done.

What BOV is on there? A ricey RFL? some sort of BOV/BPV hybrid? You might want to seek out guidance from the NASIOC/MNSubaru crowd regarding the quality of that BOV before getting it tuned. If you get it tuned then find that the BOV is a turd, then you would/should need to get it re-tuned when you replace it.

Any way that is my unsolicited $.02

Yea... I just looked at that grimmspeed website and I think thats the place I would be going.

+1 on don't mess with anything near the airflow sensor, it will play havoc on your tune.

An upgraded TMIC helps quite a bit. The factory tune on most of the subaru's are far from optimum. This is due to the wide range of climates the wrx is used and how much safety Subaru had to build into the tune because of a TMIC.

The guys at Grimmspeed know their Subaru's and we worked on quite a few subarus when our shop was open. Let me know if you want to meet up, I can pull your ROM file and see if it has any tuning on it.
