First of all, no its not my mazdaspeed3. Second of all "get rid of it" is not an option. :)

Some of you have meet my good friend ROFLGOLF. ROFLGOLF is a 1988 VW Golf 4 door GL, 1.8 8V (at the moment...) with 71,000 miles.

The rear quarter panels suffer of some rust, in some areas I know I will have to grind it away and repaint. It won't be pretty when done, but it will prevent it from spreading. I can get the factory "fender flares" and that would probably cover up much of the "surgery" scars, but I'm wondering if there's any other options out there...

Thanks for playing! I'll have to get pictures up later...

I'M OFFENDED!
Surface rust can usually be ground away and Bondo'd for a decent look, and mebbe add the flares to cover that. If it's all the way through, you got no choice but to cut the rust out and start over. If I was you, and it was in a difficuly area to replicate with sheet steel (as in, wheel arches, places where there are lots of bends) find a rust free car that's been wrecked, and cut out what you need from that. Might as well make VW bend it for you.

That's a sooper idea that I hadn't considered being that I'm new to this fixing old car thing :)

Now I think I need me an angle grinder...

Only suitable if it's powered by a ridiculously oversized air compressor. Tools=good. Power tools=better. Air tools=Best.

Sawzall FTW. A little electric jigsaw with a good blade might work if you have small areas where you need a precise cut.

I'd be careful with flares, as they can trap dirt, salt, and other debris and actually be a place that encourages new rust to form.
