Did someone say math?

I watched a show on Discovery channel about roller coasters, so I'm pretty much an expert on how to design loops and corkscrews.
And I always thought tney put em up, and shot people through em until they got the right speed, and built accordingly.

Completely offtopic- but the mention of Top Gear and pinewood derby in the same thing reminded me of something. YEARS ago (seriously probably 20 years ago, or more) I was in Cub Scouts. I got to do ONE pinewood derby. And while I did rather poorly at it- I remember one kid getting actually removed from the event. The reason? He had two small "figurines" as driver and passenger of his car. They weren't pornographic or anything, nor did they swing his car over the weight limit. They WERE however, live .38 slugs... and somehow his dad, who was standing right there, didn't see a problem with it.

Anyhow... so are we need to do loop physics... hokay.

Did you guys ever build a co2/estes rocket cars? That way you don't have to worry about a building/renting a track. Oh an they also can get up to like 30mph...

That way you don't have to worry about half the fun
FTFY. :p

And yeah, figuring out a loop is pretty easy stuff once you get down to it. The only tricky part is figuring out what kind of frictional losses you're going to encounter going down the ramp and back up the hill. But if you want to be safe, just make the hill twice as high as the high point of the loop. Then you could have a bonus prize for anyone inept enough to build a car that can't clear the thing. lol

Oh, there'll be rockets at some point, I'm sure. ON the track.

So we obviously have some intrest, any ideas on rules and such, cause I'm game to start building something, I have enough shit in the garage as it is.

Welp, I posted the official BSA rules in the first post. Other than the whole lead thing- (y'all can poison yourselves if'n you're so inclined) I figure we follow those. That makes for less pissing and moaning. Plus, they're pretty clearly written- because apparently people like us have attempted to let their churrens cheat at derby before. I guess the big trick would be figuring out the track, and who's a guaranteed participant, and who we can TRUST to be official judges. THEN we can worry about building a track, with or without a loop.

Isn't the toughest aspect the "finish line" electronics that help determine who actually won? I might be up for trying this out, since I was always in the middle of the pack back in scouts.

Yeah, there is that. I imagine we'll just have to cam the end of the track and frame by frame it if there's a fist fight gonna break out. Or we could just fist fight.

/i see this getting wildly out of control and never getting completed. Though, the thought of mad max meets pinewood sort of amuses me.

Our pack times each run, and run each car on each track at least twice, then use an average to determine the winner. This is done to remove the variblity in time caused by the track.

Interesting aside Jurgen- because I see this as a possible community svc project for us.... what would it take to say- run against your pack? Get your mini-me and all his homies together and do a run one night... maybe take em out for some boosties rides or something? And run their pinewood cars against ours? Could be piles of fun, and a great way to get MNMazda out there.
