Forum Mafia Game? Basic Info HERE! ALso, Signup 1

So, a few weeks ago I started playing this forum game called Mafia. It's a game of deception and trickery, I suppose. It eats up a good portion of my free time at work and gives me something to do when I'm bored. I like it A LOT.

I was thinking about starting up a game here and was wondering if people would actually be interested in playing it if I were to moderate a game. There is a fair bit of work involved in moderating, so I'd rather not go through the trouble if people don't think they'd be interested in it.

A quick overview of how it works:

X number of players join the game and are randomly assigned to a team. At the most basic level (which it would be for the first game, at least) there are only two teams. There are the town (good), and the scum (bad). The typical newbie game setup consists of 7 town and 2 scum. As the moderator, I would randomly assign people to teams and send out PMs to all players telling them what team they are on. No one knows what team anyone else is on, with the exception of the scum, who know who their partner is. (This creates a big advantage to scum, because they are the only people who know 100% what team everyone is on, which is why they are so outnumbered)

The point of the game is for your faction to reach it's win condition. For town, this is to lynch all the scum players. For scum, this is to make it impossible for the town to win. It doesn't matter who is left at the end of the game, if town reaches their condition, all town players win. If town does not reach their win condition, then scum win.

The way the game is played is as follows.

Once everyone receives their PMs telling them their roles (town or scum), they confirm they are ready to play, and the game starts. The game is played in phases, called "Days" with a "night" cycle in between. Typically, a "Day" lasts a set period of time, or until someone is lynched. During the day, all players may discuss the game in the thread. The point of the day is for the town players to try and figure out who the scum are and lynch them.

For a lynch to occur, players must vote for who they want to lynch. Once a majority vote is reached, a lynch occurs and night comes. Players can vote for whoever they want for any reason they want.

Once the day is over, night occurs. During the night, the thread is locked and no more discussion can take place. The scum may kill one player (a night kill). They do this by sending the moderator a PM telling him who they would like to kill. Once that happens, the game moves on to "Day 2" with an announcement from the mod telling everyone who was killed during the night and the thread is unlocked for everyone to further discuss the game.

If you are killed (lynched or night killed) you can no longer post ANYTHING in the thread. You are dead, dead people can't talk.

This cycle continues until one team wins.

One VERY IMPORTANT basic rule:
1. No one may discuss the game outside of the game thread.
1a. The scum players are given the opportunity to talk at night (and before the game starts) to talk strategy and determine who they want to kill. They are not allowed to talk outside the thread at any other time.

That's an EXTREMELY basic overview of how it works. There's WAY more info here: http://mafiascum.net/wiki/index.php?title=Rules

If people are interested in at least giving it a try, let me know and I'll set something up. If you have more questions, post up and I will answer them.

Like I said, I really enjoy this, so I thought I'd share the love.

MAD LIGHTS YO
sounds similar/the same as the card game mafia. i'd be interested, but it would depend when the 'day' cycle is. seeing as i only get online after 4pm.

IN41! I got a pretty deep overview of the game in reading some of the game that Dan's currently working on, and it seems like it could be fun. Especially some of the dirty dirty strategy that comes into it.

Kris. There is mention of a cardgame in the Wiki. I'm fairly certain this is based on that.

Also, a day in the game I am playing now lasts 2 weeks. I think we can cut that down based on the activity level of our members though. I'm thinking probably like a week. The players have to have enough time to form an opinion on who is scum, but there also needs be pressure to make a decision before night, because once night comes, a town player will be killed.

So... outside of known personal rivalies existing outside of the game, what objective or subjective methods do you go by to figure out who's who? Are there some kind of interactions based on your role, or does everyone just sit around going "hurrrrrr, let's lynch mojo cause he's a troll"?

I mean, say I'm a scum. Outside of being a terribad horseshit liar, what would I do or say that would clue people in to my role? Just seems like it would be very 1-dimensional unless I'm missing something.

I'M OFFENDED!
Thats the whole idea... you're not s'posed to let on that you're scum, while successfully killing all the townies. Also, lying is easier in type.

But that's what I mean though... if I just say "I'm not a scum" what's left to discuss? It's not like you can start questioning me about why I was hanging out with Dan over in that shady "what's you favorite way to stab someone?" thread, because there's no real (or even virtual) basis to the role you're playing.

Starting out the game is the toughest part really... but there are a couple theories on the best way to do that.

One way people start out the game is via the "Random voting stage" in which people just vote for each other for random reasons. Any reason is a good one.

Another is the "Random Questioning Stage" in which someone(or multiple people) post a few questions for people to answer. They can be customized to each person, or just a list for everyone to answer.

The important thing is simply to just get some discussion going. Once there's some discussion going on, you just start picking apart what everyone says and look for anything and everything you can find to accuse someone of being scum.

If you follow the link to the wiki above, there's also a pretty large set of forums FULL of games you could browse to kinda get the idea. "The Road to Rome" is the newbie section, I'd start there.

The fact is, Scum already knows everything they need to know. Town don't know anything.

The disadvantage scum has is that they have to try and convince everyone to vote for someone who is innocent. How do you do that? Over analyze things, twist words, manipulate people, whatever.

The advantage town has is the truth. If someone starts building a case against a town player, all that town player has to do is find the flaws in the case and hope that they can convince everyone else that the case isn't enough to justify a lynch. The tough part is, like I said before, only scum know who is telling the truth and who is lying.

----------------------

If I were to say "I know Tom is town", a reasonable question to ask is "How does Dan KNOW Tom is town? I could have simply mis-spoken, but maybe I didn't. Maybe I slipped up and revealed that I know something that a town player wouldn't know. It would be easy for me to simply say "Oh, I don't KNOW, whoops." But it's something to consider.

Another thing to do is to analyze the intentions behind the post. If I manage to build a case against Tom. Is it air-tight and does it make complete sense? If you can find holes in the case, then maybe I'm a scum player looking to get Tom lynched by putting together a BS case against him.

You have to analyze everything and consider every possible angle of every post.

There is also the potential for some other players have special powers... The details about this are here: http://mafiascum.net/wiki/index.php?title=F11

Essentially, there are 3 power-roles (PRs) that you could possibly see:
Cop - Town player with the ability to "investigate" one person per night. The cop can learn the status of any other player, if they are town or scum.
Doctor - Town player with the ability to protect one person per night. The doc can prevent another player from dieing due to a night kill. If the doc protects the person the scum target for a kill, then that person lives.
Mafia Roleblocker (RB) - Mafia player with the ability to prevent another PR from using their ability. The roleblocker prevents any of the above from working.

During the night phase, any of the power roles will send a PM to the mod and tell the mod who they want to target with what ability. The mod will send a PM back telling that player the results of their actions.

Ooh, another rule is: NO editting of posts. If you post something it is set in stone...

I'll have to see about setting up a separate forum where only I have admin powers.

So, for the PRs, I assume the identity is not known by other players?

See, now things are starting to sound a little more interesting.

Nope, scum will know who each other are, including whether one is a roleblocker or not, but no one else knows anything. If you read the link above, one of the F11 setups is picked at random, and you don't even get to know that. Therefore, town won't even know for sure if there are any PRs, and scum will not know for sure if there is a cop, a doc, or both.
