I suppose it depends on what you are throwing away. If I have anything that I don't want seen (cc statements, etc) I either shred them at home, or take them to work for shredding.

Then there is the issue for potential liability and mess when others go through your trash. If someone is injured while digging (such as on broken glass or anything else), is it truly at their own risk?

When I worked at papa johns, we had to be careful to place the sharp lids from aluminum cans inside the can and then smash the top of the can so the lid can't fall out. Apparently it was to protect the people who go dumpster diving from getting all cut up.

its a hayday for crazies with pickups/trailers. They drive through neighborhoods and take all kinds of junk off the curb.

They actually aren't crazies, they are scrappers. They take anything with metal that can be scrapped for money. THey go up and down the alleys in mpls as well they can make pretty good money. I know this because I recycle my cans and my own scrap metal instead of throwing it out and I see them at the recycling place with trucks full of scrap. It's good for the environment and it's free money so it's a win win in my book.
