Awe shit! I think it I do a tune up, I might as well do the coil pack as well. Yar?

What plugs and wires should I buy and how much will a coil cost?

What kind of car do you have again?

I agree with tom it's most likely a coil. Unless you've got something older, it's most likely coil-on-plug, in which case there's no wires to worry about. Plugs also depend on what car you've got... but most mazdas use NGK plugs factory, which are very good. So unless you're pretty well modded, I'd use the OEM plugs. If you're getting a misfire and your car uses newer style iridium plugs like a lot of mazdas, the electrode can foul up pretty fast, so you're definitely going to want to at least check the plugs out.

I think I'll be doing plugs, wires and the #2 coil.

Car is an 04 MZ3. It calls for iridium, so NGK Iridiums are what's going in there. Now, what wires? Car is stock. I knew what options I had with my Focus, not so much with my 3.

Fancy that - I just had P0301 in my MS6, replaced coil+plug since the plug looked really bad, now I have a P0302 LOL, so I'm replacing all the coils. The plugs were just done in the other three and I haven't driven it much since the P0302 so I'm hoping the plugs will be fine still in 2-4. I've heard on other vehicles of coils failing one after another which is why I'm just going to do all of them now.

You might want to at least consider replacing all of them, also check amazon and rockauto for pricing, they were both far cheaper than local even paying for overnight shipping.

Mazda3 is coil-on-plug, so the coils sit right on top of the spark plugs. No plug wires at all!
Alright. I'll tell autozone they are a bunch of douche canoes trying to sell me plugs and wires.

I think you guys got me looking into the coils as well. Where's the best place to pick them up?

My issue when I was getting P03xx codes was the plugs not being fully tightened(I was scared of breaking them off in the head). I replaced one coil that looked bad and nothing changed. My suggestion is to change all the spark plugs (or just the problem one first) before buying new coils.

Depending on how many miles are on your car - Kris' suggestion isn't an all bad one. The only issue is if a coil is bad and you replace the plug, you may end up fouling it out if you don't catch it fast enough and have to replace it again. If you're going to do that I would replace all 4 plugs and watch very closely if they are not burning clean or you get codes I'd do the coils (personally).

I got mine (coils) from Rockauto for about $55/ea or so.

FWIW just installed my new coils, all codes and issues I was having w/ the car have been resolved, hurray.

Alright, got the plugs swapped. #2 cylinder spark plug came out in 2 pieces. The terminal nut came off in the coil boot when I pulled it off. The spark plug still in the motor. Swapped them, cleared code and we will go from there.

I went with Beck/Arnley coils, purchased from Rock Auto for $56.79 each - Had horrible Missing and CEL anytime I pushed the car into high RPM's or under boost > 3-4psi. I pulled all the plugs and checked the gap / made sure they werent fouled (plugs are <5,000 miles old) and re-torqued them all and replaced the four coils. Did a number of WOT pulls up to 6k rpm's and no issues now.

Bought a generic coil from NAPA for $35. Has a 1 year warranty. It was the only one in stock. Plugged it in and CEL went away right away. I didn't disconnect the battery and it still went away. If that's the fix, I'll look into replacing all of them with better coils.

You replaced all the plugs? Is the code for the same cylinder?

I'd do what you do when testing HID kits, move only the plug OR coil and see if the problem stays or moves.

Yeah. Replaced all the plugs.

I'm going to check the code again and make sure it's the same. If it is, swap coils and take a look at the injector. Maybe I got a dud replacement coil.

Well, checked the code. New, similarity related code of P0300: Random Misfire. I'm going to run some seafoam through it and see what it does. Other than that, I don't know where to go from there.
