# The current passenger vehicle registration tax is imposed by M.S. 168.013 and is calculated based upon the value and age of the vehicle. The tax is equal to $10 plus an additional amount equal to 1.25 percent of the vehicle's base value (manufacturer's suggested retail price).

# The value of the vehicle is depreciated over time as follows: 100 percent of base value for the first and second year; 90 percent for the third and fourth years; 75 percent for the fifth and sixth years; 60 for the seventh year; 40 percent for the eighth year; 30 percent for the ninth year; and 10 percent for the tenth year.

# For the eleventh year and each year thereafter, the additional tax is equal to a flat sum of $25 (total of $35).
EDIT: That document is from 1998, so it may be slightly inaccurate, but it should give a good idea where the registration fee comes from.

Based off those figures, all MS3's would be subject to a registration fee of $10 + 1.25% of the MSRP, so unfortunately $290 sounds about right :(

yah, ms3 $290, sadly that's correct. From what I understand the new gas tax bill increased this amount too. It was just in the star trib the other day.

I thought mine were like $190 or $210 when I paid them this spring...I'll have to double check that. $290 sounds high.

You paid them when you got the car too. $290 shouldn't be too much of a surprise

But i dont understand, why my mustang would only be $90, its only 4 years old so if we are using the law posted above...the mustang should have been $400ish since it cost 36,000 new.

Often when you buy your car though you don't pay for a whole year.

Your tabs might be good for 10 or 11 months and they pro-rate it.

Also, I think there were some recent changes in those fees.

Under Jesse Ventura, you still pay the initial and first renewal under that formula. After that, it is subject to a $99 cap, so if the calculated amount is over $99, you are limited to $99.

So next year i should pay $99?
Right. My tab renewal this year was $130 because I have DNR plates (they tack on a $30 donation every year). I bought my car in the spring of 2006, and my 2007 tabs were somewhere around $190.
