Jana I mentioned to Jess that you were planning on taking 6 weeks off (she took 3 months off and then worked part time her 4th month after having Ella) and she said 'You should tell Jana the same thing someone told me before Ella was born. The time you have after your baby is born is the only time you'll ever have one-on-one with them. There's no going back to relive those moments, so take as much time off with them as you possibly can.'
Financially we had to plan carefully for Jess to have the time off, and I ended up taking some time off as well. I was able to take paternity leave (coded as FMLA time after a life event with my employer) and ended up taking a total of 3 weeks of time. I used 1 week of vacation and had the other 2 weeks as non-paid time, but looking back on it, it was a really great time for us together. Granted, everyone's situation will vary, but if there's a way to swing it, taking some time up front to enjoy your little girl and bond with her up front is something you won't regret.
