Jon's 2010 RX7 Fun!

So I've begun the process of making my rx7 road ready now. I figure what the hell why not make a running log of what I've done! So far I've put in 3 days of work and not a whole lot has gotten done thanks to working late and hardware stores closing at 8.

My plans are to get all the wheels re-polished/finished to make them like new and mount up the new meaty tires, fixing my front sway bar end link problem, and getting my full exhaust on the car.

Day 1:
Got the car into the garage today, its up on stands, as it will remain for a while as all the work is done and gotten all the wheels off of the car. Made a quick run to Ace to get some bolts for the exhaust as well. Air horns are also installed, which I am VERY much looking forward to, they are loud as hell.

Day 2:
Started working with the exhaust today. Muffler is mostly on, but i found out that two very important brackets were welded to the old muffler, thanks to MIDAS, so I will have to custom make something in their place. Also I got the exhaust manifold bolted on and began to on getting the catalytic converters installed.

Day 3:
Ran into some more problems. The exhaust I have is off of an 81 rx7, mine being a 1984, and supposedly they should be a straight swap. However, the car it came off of had a manual gearbox, mine being an automatic, and thus, there is a bracket on the catalytic converters that will not clear my transmission making this exhaust not fit on the car. The back half, being the muffler and the intermediate pipe, are all bolted up and fit just fine, but the cats will not work so it's on to plan B. I will be having a custom cat-delete pipe made up to make this exhaust work, and making it so I can completely delete my emissions. Oh and shoot flames! The rims have not yet been touched but are due for sandblasting saving me at least 2 days of sanding.

Wait a minute, these should be lined up!

Now I know that rubber donut can't stretch THAT far

I swear these are supposed to link up together, maybe its a rotary thing that they don't!

The problem child that should not be on my exhaust

Day 4:
Made some progress today! Basically all I did was focus on getting the wheels done thus, here is the end result of today, one wheel mostly done and the rest about half way. all this wheel needs is a little paint work (changing the gun metal to gloss black) and clear coat.

Day 5:
Just continued sanding today more or less. However, I painted one rim. This is basically the finished product but without the clear coat.

I'm going to try to finish the last 2 wheels tonight with ivan. I'll try to remember to snap some pics. Theyre not "show car" by any means, but theyre definitely better. I just cant seem to get the scratches out no matter how much wet sanding 2000 grit i do! lol

Are they scratches you can feel with your fingernail? If so, I don't think 2000 grit is gonna do much for you.

High speed polishing will get them out. Try a rotary(the hand held style) with a wool pad and maybe some heavy cut compound from any of the big name brands. That will remove the 2k grit marks and leave you with a dull but flat surface. Then hit it with light cut or finishing compound and that should clean it up and make it shine. But if they are left unprotected then expect to be polishing every couple months to keep the shine going.

Well i decided to just go with them as is, i plan on getting new wheels eventually anyways. The rims got a little dinged up from the mounting but hey, they still look great. Heres my final result, I'm proud as hell!

Ill try to get around to posting more sanding/polishing pics later, I didnt get many since I got so wrapped up in working on them I forgot to take pictures most of the time.

Just about. My car is going up to get its exhaust finished up over this week so all I'll have left is tuning and timing it.
