Kaiyin's IS300 Turbo: Never-ending project...sit back...

Well, every car has a beginning, and mine is no different. This car I have held onto since 2006 and the car has seen a number of different make overs, but one thing has never changed, and that has been the goal to make a lot of power. I've always loved the 2JZ and new the potential of the car when I bought it. Originally, I bought the car to be a daily driver while I built my 240sx for Formula D. Needless to say, that car got parted out and the IS took the spotlight and hasn't left it for a number of years.

So, let's start from day one, April 11th, 2006, the day I brought my IS300 home. 03, Absolute Red, auto, 38k on the clock, stock save for tint and JDM tails. Tint was removed later by dealer.

Back then, I was working at a shop. Later that day, I had installed Tein suspension, 17" ADR wheels, and fabricated an intake and exhaust for it

that was as far as the car was supposed to go...then, I had all these turbo parts in the garage, and well...

a little over a month later, I had the car torn apart for a turbo install. The first kit I did wasn't that great. I enlisted the help of Chuck back when he had Boost Factory to redo it, but more on that in a bit. The car ran alright, and I decided to get a body kit for the car. I bought a very rare, 11-piece wide-body kit from WALD Japan

Turbo kit 1:

Now, here's where things started to get interesting. Dropped the car at Boost Factory for a few weeks while welding-master Chuck did his thing. I was very happy with the end result. This kit performed great!

polished up

back then, I ran a Greddy e-manage blue with a Boost Logic fuel system which consisted of a Walbro 255 pump and 550cc injectors

Results of turbo v 1.5: 405hp/375tq @ 12psi
-stock 2JZ-GE
-Garrett 60-1 turbo
-BF manifold and i/c piping
-Greddy FMIC
-3" dp/exhaust
-Boost Logic fuel system
-Greddy E-manage blue

car ran great, so I focused on some other areas:

C-West bumper to replace cut up stock one. At this point, I took off the WALD wide-body and sold it

audio install:

let's go racing

This puts us around summer of 2007. I took the car to the Chicago2k7 Supra meet following the TX2k7 Supra meet. I decided to turn up the boost and fried my stock rings on the dyno. :( I got the car back to MN and started the tear down to plan the new build. I started gathering parts right away:

4" straight through muffler for new 4" exhaust

tubular manifold

catch-can

tear down, old motor out

new turbo from Boost Logic:

You want parts? I GOT PARTS!

polished

assembly

bottom end:
-bored and honed 2JZ-GE
-polished/balanced crank
-Eagle HD rods
-Clevite 77 race bearings
-ARP rod bolts and mains
-Wiseco pistons
-ARP head studs
-OE 2JZ-GTE head-gasket
-OE 2JZ-GTE oil pump and water pump

head:
-port & polished GE head
-Brian Crower springs and retainers
-BC 272 VVT-i cams

this was just after the new year of 08. I was looking for a new fab shop to help with installing my new turbo. This was when I met LJ and the crew over at Full Blown. I booked the car in not knowing what would happen over the years as we took the car from street cruiser to all-out drag car.

fitting the T88

abs and tb where not having it, so we moved the abs and chopped the tb

abs where battery was

starting the I/C piping

down-pipe

finished up

time for some dress-up stuff. Got some candy-coated covers from a friend in Cali and an HKS intake

also ordered some 17" Work Emotion CR Kais in bronze. They took a few months, but worth it

also, upgraded the fuel system to a return style setup with a Fuel Lab FPR and Fuel Lab filter with a -8an return

and it was time to tune. Waste-gate, 7psi

picked up a new drag setup. 16x8 FD wheels with 26" MT ET Streets

Time for HIN '08 so I stickered up the car, lol

and finalized the tune. 18psi on 92oct pump

Now for the '09 build:
PFS race-built auto

upgraded drive-shaft

back at Full Blown

new trans in

I decided to up it again and tuned for VP110 race gas. Keep in mind, we were still on one 255 fuel pump and 550cc injectors. 23psi with a little timing in it

single pump wouldn't push much more, so what do you do...

have Full Blown make a dual pump using their fancy billet hangers. Plus, we added some bracing to the I/C piping to help keep it from blowing off when we cranked the boost

another new 4" exhaust using a Burns race muffler

time to tune again...low boost and the car didn't want to stay on the dyno....

snapped a strap on this pull

we finished street tuning the car and it pulled great. I took the car to TX again and threw down against 700hp Supras and a few liter bikes and came out on top. The car was running amazing and did work on the street.

End of '09 and it was time to ditch my trusty E-manage to get a full standalone. I was one of the first to get Haltech's new Platinum ECU

5-bar map sensor...we're gonna go big

yay for wiring

all done

this was just a funny pic

okay, for 2010, things were pretty mild to start. I sold my Works and picked up some 19" Enkei Phalenx

and some TRD shit...=P

and some 1000cc injectors....

and started my hood project

car went to Full Blown to get the new injectors put in along with a new catch can so we can tune for e85

got some ish powder-coated too

e85, the car put down 733hp at only 28psi. Maxed out my waste-gate spring at 34-ish on the street and the car pulled like a freight train.

Now, the car is sitting on jack-stands, torn apart waiting for the new setup to be ready to go. I've sold the old turbo and fuel system in preparation for a new one. I was building a crazy 1200+hp turbo setup but have now decided for a more street-able setup. New fuel system is the current twin walbro 255s with a single Bosch 044 added inline, custom Full Blown fuel rail with twin-feeds, and FIC 2150cc injectors. New turbo is a Precision billet 7175 and I'm ditching my TH400 setup for a v160 6spd from the Supra. New setup should be good for around 850-900hp on e85 with good response and fast spool.

I'll keep the thread updated with progress

Great to see the progress of nearly 5 years in one thread. It's amazing how tastes and fad's change over the years too. Sure looks like one helluva fun ride!

Really neat setup and I love how unassuming it looks. One question... considering the car appears to be a "drag car" why ditch the auto for a manual?

That's a lot of wrench time you've put into this. Nice work!

yep, yep, it is interesting to see how things have changed in the scene over the years, but I've always just focused on the motor, haha. It is a fun car for sure and I can't wait to have it running again.

Why ditch the auto? Well, it's just boring to drive, haha. Plus, highway sucks with 3 gears. I've always wanted a 6spd in the car and came close last year after buying a 5spd from a 1JZ (R154), but ended up selling to keep furthering the progression with the auto. A 6spd will be much more fun to drive and keep the car that much more streetable. Plus, it's fun to bang gears at the track:

thank you, but I can't take all the credit for this one:

Ron at RS Motors built me a killer engine
LJ and the crew at Full Blown for awesome fab work and tuning
My friends for coming over and putting in late nights helping with everything else
