Another suggestion.

Do like Matt says and keep hitting F8 before it boots. Choose safe mode if that works. Then, you can go into Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

System Restore (when it's turned on) will allow you to restore your computer to an earlier (functioning) configuration from a week/month ago.

Sometimes if something got downloaded or installed that corrupted your system this will get you back to before that happened when your system was operating normally.

well I got home last night, hit F8 and it gave me the option to run it from the last point when the system was working and it booted up just fine. I then ran the scan disk, everything is back to normal. I am going to back up my HD asap however!

thanks again for the help

Great to hear that. My pc crashed about 2 month ago and let me tell you it makes you fell like you have lost every important thing in your life. I now do a backup every week to a disc.

I think I might have to invest in an external HD. How cheap do you think I could get one?

I've seen decent ones for about $100. I prefer Seagate, but Western Digital is good too. Stay away from Maxtor.

Backing your shit up is good. I have all our computers at home set to back up to a network drive every hour. House burns down, grab the drive and GTFO.
