Well, there's actually two problems with the chatbox when it comes to MNMazda's usage patterns:

1. Server CPU load and network bandwidth
2. Database size and turnover

Nothing can cure #1 except for a beefier VPS/dedicated server. #2 can be mitigated by keeping only the smallest of information in the database -- keep only the last 30 chats or so, and don't bother keeping statistics (post count, etc.). The database will still get thrashed, but provided that the server hardware end has been addressed (faster CPU, etc.), it should be OK. To keep things from really going downhill long-term, the chatbox DB should receive periodic maintenance -- in the very least an optimization, if not just blowing it away and creating a new one, every couple months or so.

Or, find a 3rd party service that can get embedded in the main page and let it all be someone else's problem.

I'm trying to decide if I should annoint myself the master-of-all-misspelling-corrections moving forward, because it's seriously starting to bug the living shit out of me that people can't even spell common words....wtf Perhaps 2-3 random corrections per day and, if the shoe fits, then the shoe motherfuckin' fits! Good grief. Alright. I'm done.

BTW... for 9... don't use firefox. I did the correct thing probably 20 times in FF, only to open IE and BAM... It's WAYYYY more obvious in IE. I spent like 2 hours in FF, and only 2 mins in IE.

Pete, I'm with ya. I have the OCD about a few things, and spelling is one of them. Of course, the misspelled posts STILL make more sense than the average Nate-ism.

This piques my interest. Now as we are ALL aware, I don't know shit about computers. BUT- I do know my internet is free. AFAIK we don't run into throttling issues for overuse, because when you're looking at 88 units on constant internet, you're gonna run huge bandwidth. There's a small part of me that wishes I knew the back end of it more, because then I could just hork everyone elses' and have the server in my living room.

You take a big risk running a server at home, since ISPs really, really hate it (and it's even explicitly prohibited in the user agreement). At best, they find out and yell at you to turn it off; at worst, they straight-up kill your connection and ban you as a customer.

I'm running a WordPress blog on a machine at home, and while it gets no hits, I know that eventually Comcast is gonna find out (probably when I get Slashdotted or something and take out the whole node, heh), but fuck them, I hate them anyway. If shit gets really serious with it, I'll just look into coloing the machine somewhere locally.

As Colin said many ISP's prohibit servers in their user agreement, specifically Comcast. Some go so far as to even block certain ports that are commonly used for various servers. I've gotten away with it on Comcast for a long time, even hosting game servers and such, it all depends on the utilization. A site like this Comcast may or may not say something, it's not really worth the risk on something you need/want to continually be up. Theur are other considerations such as not being able to get a static IP address with Comcast (unless you have business class), power and cooling (as well as backup power), etc.

If I ever get upgraded to VDSL and have more than 1mb Upstream I'd be happy to host a site on my ESXi server but as of now my 1meg up would not suffice.
