Smoking Turbo - Again...Thoughts?

Hey all, so here's my situation:

2008 ms3, 68,XXX miles, and another smoking turbo. According to the newest Smoking Turbo TSB in the first thread here: http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/show...-01-004-10-(8-18-2010)-Smoking-Turbo-(Speed-3) , there is a newer/updated turbo. The exhaust smokes at idle and in slow traffic, just like the TSB says. What are the odds of them saying they'll replace it? The original was replaced under warranty and I still have the receipt for it. Will they say, "Oooopsk, sorry, we know we fugged up with the turbo and didn't tell you that when you purchased the vehicle, and since you are out of warranty we aren't going to replace it"? Or, will they say, "yeah, we know its a problem, and we know how to fix it. For free".

What do you guys think?!

From my reading of the TSB it sounds like you have to still be within warranty, plus with you AM parts they could likely point to the DP and say that caused it.

Put the car back to stock as much as you can, take it to Morries and plead your case...worth a shot.

With 68k on the clock, they might just say tough shit... but yeah, put it as back to stock as is reasonable, and go from there.

Run 5w40 oil and see if that cures it. Much easier to do that then go back to stock, bring to dealer which will likely get denied of a free replacement anyways.

I dont know if this would help at low throttle/idle, but I installed an OCC on my 2009 MS3 and it heavily reduced the smoke output when getting on it. Not sure if it would even be 'too late' for that or not.

Yeah, I really do not want to go back to stock. So...I'm thinking bigger turbo. Still doing research on everything I'll need. This is what I have so far:

GT3071R turbo
catch can
tuning software
TIP
fuel pump?
FMIC?

What do you all think? Am I missing anything? The car will obviously turn into my DD for the summer, and I'll get something crappy to tool around in the winter with. Bye Bye monies...

Downpipe, and take the question mark off the fuel pump... you will need one, at least a CDFP. The stock injectors are fine, and guys are tuning 3076's with AP's, so you have no problems there.

You forgot manifold, wastegate, and larger MAF. I think that's about it as far as hardware goes, but prepare to spend a buttload on accessories like fittings, hose and such. Plenty of build threads on other forums to touch off of.

I don't think he needs all that if he's going bigger turbo though he may want it at some point. First question to ask is what type of budget do you have for this project? That will really be the fact that dictates what parts you'll need from the ones you can do later. Could always get a turbo that bolts to the stock mani and WG and you could get by with the stock MAF. Plus you have to ask the question of how many pony’s you ultimately want, cause doing this the “right” way by upgrading all these parts is going to give you some big gains which will lead to quicker failure of other parts and much larger repair/upgrade bills in the future.

I already have the Turboxs DP, which I believe would fit to the 3071r. I thought they were both 3inch.

I'd really be happy if I could keep the build under $6k, but I'm willing to spend a little more to keep it a safe and enduring build. Power wise, I'd like low 300s. I don't want super high stress on everything. I just want moar power and less smoke.

What about forged internals? Needed? Overkill?

Considering a 3071 is a T3 flange he'll absolutely need a new mani and downpipe. He'll need a larger TIP to fit the turbo, and a larger intake to match (which would also require a larger MAF). If he's dead-set on upgrading the turbo just because it's smoking I feel if he doesn't want to spend $3-5k to fix it by upgrading, there's plenty of things he can do (run thicker oil, replace the turbo seal, get a catch can and/or a new banjo bolt or all of the above). However, if he is dead set on going big turbo then a GT28 or a ported stocker isn't worth the hassle or cost for the minor power increase. If you're going to go big, do it right the first time - we all know it'll be twice as costly if you half-ass it the first time.

The flange on your downpipe won't work with the 3071 outlet. You can re-flange it though. $6k will be PLENTY for what you're looking to do.

You don't need forged internals especially for those power goals. Your clutch, transmission, and bottom end will all be perfectly fine at that power level.

I recommend going on MSF and searching the BT build threads here: http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/forum/f498/

There are some EXCELLENT write-ups that will show you step-by-step how to do everything. It'll be a lengthy process, so hopefully you have a spare car and some time to spare.
