The family and I went to the auto show on Sunday and though it was smaller than it has been in years past (seriously....spread the cars out a bit more rather than mashing them into a tighter space), I was pleasantly surprised by the variety. It was great to see Fiskar's appearance and most manufacturers had a pretty nice variety.
We were mainly looking at potential replacements for Jess' 2004 Honda Pilot that's nearing 150K miles. I wasn't impressed at all by the new Pilot, but we were amazed at how much we liked the feel and versatility of the Volvo XC90. I also loved the panoramic roof on the Volkswagen Touareg and the Audi Q7, as well as the mileage of the TDIs. I was disappointed by the high load-in height of the Q7 and small cargo area overall, so the Touareg is my #1 choice with the XC90 a close 2nd. If the Volvo had a panoramic roof I'd be all over it. The fact that the Touareg doesn't even come with the option of a DVD player is a major disappointment for Jess (a surprising oversight to me too, given the price points the vehicle covers), but I don't know that it's a deal breaker since portable DVD players are so inexpensive these days. I like the idea of the DVD players in the headrests on the Volvo combined with the wireless headphones that come with the package. The Volvo also has an ingenious rigid flap that flips up in the back of the cargo area that provides the perfect place to fit paper grocery bags between the rigid flap and the tailgate. Such a simple feature that other manufactures should definitely consider copying at least as an option for families tired of grocery bags falling all over the back cargo area of their vehicle on the way home from the store.
We also looked at the offerings from Lexus, Infinity, Nissan, Acura and Cadillac with nothing piquing our interest. Most were either too huge with V8s getting horrible gas mileage or too small to accomodate our space requirements when traveling.
So what were you guys checking out at the show? Were there any vehicles you were surprised you liked? Any cool features you wish you had in your car right now, or that you might look for in a future purchase?
