Turbo leaking oil

Well, I know I've commented to many of you about my car lacking in the boosties lately. At a visit to Morrie's, they found a bad sensor in the intake manifold (apparently, I was throwing a code about the intake runner flaps malfunctioning), and they wanted to try replacing that first.

Well just now I was out in the garage, getting ready to try and seal up an exhaust leak.... lo and behold, I see a big ol droplet of oil on the bottom side of the turbo. And Morries' service department just closed moments ago... grrr. Anyways, I know Micah had pretty much the same issue a little while back, but is this a common thing? I'm still under my factory warranty for another couple months, so I'm not too worried.

Oh, another question: you guys think they're going to give me shit about the catless J-Midpipe I installed last weekend? I've heard morries is pretty cool about mods, but I'm wondering if I shouldn't take the time to swap the stock midpipe back on before I go in.... I can't imagine how an exhaust part is going to effect a turbo in the span of a week, but I can imagine that a dealer might try to blame it on that.

Anyhow, I'll post back here once I learn more.

Exactly, they have to be able to prove that any after market part you put in actually caused the problem and I doubt that exhaust would have anything to do with it.... my turbo is leaking oil too. I noticed that when I changed my oil last, I was under my car and there was a pool on the bottom of my turbo as well. I think this is a pretty common issue with the MSPs but I can't tell if it is just a feeder line gone bad or if the turbo is actually leaking. I'm past my 50k warranty but I have the extended with a $100 deductible. You should bring yours in ASAP for the leak and see what they do since you won't have to pay anything. Keep me posted cause if they do say it is a pretty bad problem and end up replacing the turbo or what not, it would be worth me paying my deductible and taking it in.

Well the turbo has been on order since last week. So, I figure I'm solid.

Have you noticed any issues with boost?

ofr me under warr. I didn't pay anythign and they replaced the seals and got me a new turbo.. if you have the time I would just take off the pipe.. I talked to the service guy about me modding the car and he said they usually call mazda and such about that. also if you don't upkeep your normal service's they may or may not cover things under warr either. so he suggested keeping up on maint. whether or not it's with them make sure to have some kind of documents. also he said if anything mazda will tell them to tell you to take off the aftermarket parts before the service center can look at your car.

oh he also said it is a common problem and he says that on those cars and the mazda turbos in general some will last a mill miles and some last 5 it all depends so it isn't unnormal for him to see a mazda turbo in for a turbo issue

Well, since I accidentally stripped the bolts on that spring-clamp section of the exhaust, I think I'll wait until they tell me to put it back to stock. Otherwise I gotta drill out some bolts or some other such PITA. lol


Also, I was running the stock exhaust when I came to them with the issue in the first place.

Oh, I'm sure they will. I was just pointing out that I had the stock exhaust on when I first brought up the boost issue, and they diagnosed it with the stock exhaust still on, so I'm not too worried about them bitching about the midpipe. In any case, I'll let you guys know when I the turbo is in! :D

Sweet, I will probably be right behind you to get mine fixed too. Also, I haven't had any boost leak. Its a solid 6 psi.

Gah, just got off the phone with Morries, and they PROMISE my new turbo to be in on monday. It had better be installed before the duluth trip, or I gon' be pissed! I'm not making that caravan in a loaner...

My turbo is sitting at morries, and I'm dropping off my car tomorrow. Can't wait to see what I get for a loaner, but they'd better hold good to their promise to have my car back to me by friday!

I drove it for about 2 minutes yesterday, while I was showing a tech the rattling noise I want looked at, but it felt uber-nice to have boost available at a tap of the accelerator, instead of having to mash the pedal to the floor and wait for the engine to pass 4k rpms.

I'm back in the loaner for now, but I hope to have it back this afternoon.

Very nice. Duluth trip should be a good oppurtunity to give it plenty of testing.

Well, just picker he up from Morries. I've got to give them props for their service department. They could just as easily have given me a big "fuck you" about tracking down the rattling/rubbing noise I was complaining about, and blamed it on my aftermarket motor mounts and midpipe. Well, they did blame it on them kind of, but they went ahead, and adjusted my exhaust a bit, installed new shifter bushings, and gave me tips on how I could fix it. (they said they would've done it for me, but it involved modifying a stock part) All this on top of replacing my turbo in under 6 hours from the minute I brought it in. Not to mention the loaner was actually a decent car--I put on almost 20% of the total miles that are currently on it's clock! lol

Anywho, just wanted to let everyone know that my experience with Morries' service department was excellent, and I'd highly recommend them to anyone else. Not even a peep of protest about my mods. I was a bit disappointed in how long it took for mazda to get them my new turbo, but that's on mazda and not the dealer.

That's awesome they got a new turbo in within 6 hours, but I wonder what "the book" calls for...? At least you didn't have to pay for any of it, $80 / hour or so for labor times 6 hours = $480 + whatever the turbo costs... yikes.
