So I finally decided enough is enough with regard to the amount of crap piling up in our garage, and I've convinced Jess to chip in on some garage cabinets/storage etc. Below are a couple of "before" pictures, followed by some not quite "after" pics, but we'll call it about 75%-of-the-way-there pics.




I still have another upper cabinet coming that I'll be mounting to the right of the 2 in the picture above, and I still need to wall-mount the 2 lower cabinets to the right of the one by the door...it's gettin' there!




You can see the lime green paint sort of cuts off on the far left of this pic, because I'm focusing on getting the 2-car parking area cleared out and finished before I tackle the 3rd stall on the left aka the MAJOR dumping ground of all things outdoor and garage related.

Some updated pics. Finished up all of the cabinets, but one which will be going up once I take out the door I currently have my vacuum mounted on. The only thing left (other than the 3rd stall, but that'll be awhile) is the flooring. I'm going to be putting in 5/8" thick 4'x6' rubber barn mats around the perimeter of the garage and a row between the 2 parking mats you see in the pictures as soon as Fleet Farm puts them on sale again. I'm hoping the thicker barn mats with the thinner parking mats will keep most of the Winter slop from the vehicles contained (I'll probably throw a bead of silicone caulk around the inside edge where the barn mats meet the parking mats, so the water can't get under the barn mats). Anybody have any ideas on how I might secure the barn mats together on a semi-permanent, but not completely permanent basis? I want them to stay together while keeping the option of removing them one-by-one of necessary for cleaning.

Yeah, it does look pretty nice.

What are these barn mats you speak of? Knowing what they are made of might spark some ideas on how to secure them together.

Looks great Pete! It's funny you posted this thread because I got the bug to start organizing my garage as well...

And picked up this shelving unit from Costco (can't find the link though) Edsal 77 in. W x 78 in. H x 24 in. D Steel Commercial Shelving Unit.. http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc...d=-1&keyword=edsal&storeId=10051#.UKvwPIfAcnE

I'm curious about these barn mats as well. I'd ideally like to get some epoxy coating on the floor. My garage is a 1.75 car garage, so its not too big, shouldn't be much work.

The barn mats are 5/8" thick (or 3/4" thick, but I'm cheap, so going with the thinner ones) 4' x 6' black rubber mats HERE with a pebble finish embossed on the top. Fleet farm has them on sale from time to time for 28.99 each, and unfortunately I decided to get them the weekend AFTER they went on sale last time (about 3 weeks ago). They're heavy enough that I don't think they'll move around much, but I'd love to figure out a way to keep them together a little more than just laying them next to each other in a row. I don't know if silicone caulk would stick to rubber and I thought about maybe doing a thin strip of velcro on each of the mats with a wide piece of velcro used to hold the 2 thin strips together, but again I don't know if the thin strips of velcro will stick to the bottom of the rubber mats. The only other idea I had was perhaps using those metal plates with points on one side like the ones they use to nail/hold together roof trusses or cheaper wooden picnic tables and stuff. Any other ideas would certainly be appreciated, because I don't know if I can buy those metal plates anywhere.

Wow, those shelves look pretty heavy duty! Are you planning on only parking one vehicle in the garage once it's done? Otherwise you may want to consider going with more wall cabinets than things that take up floor space. There are also a lot of ceiling-mounted racks of various sizes that would allow you to store things while being able to park a vehicle underneath the stored items, especially if you have a lot of clearance between the garage door in the "up" position and the ceiling. I don't, unfortunately, but for the lucky people that do have that space, the ceiling-mounted racks can really maximize the space. I would think permanent storage like that would help re-sale value for your townhome too.

Actually, I think those nail plates they use to assemble roof trusses (and/or wood pallets) would be great for keeping the edges of those mats together. At 5/8" thick, I wouldn't think the spikes would stand a chance of penetrating all the way through the mat unless they really compress. But it would be cheap to try out.

That is a great transformation, interested in floor mats also.

Floor epoxy is nice, but can get very slippery when wet.
