MNMazda 24 Hours of Lemons....

I think I saw one in Ohio, basically we would just pick whatever one was closest most likely, and have to secure a trailer and a tow vehicle.

Lets start up a list of items we would have to buy or otherwise procure:

Lemons car + suspension bits + any repairs needed to make it reliable - $500 max

Brakes (Rotors + Pads, possibly more)
Brake fluid
Wheels (can likely use the stockers)
Tires (the best we can afford)
Fire Extinguisher + Mount
Helmets for all drivers
Fire Suits for all drivers
5 point racing harness
Full roll cage
Fuel Cell

A garage to work in + tow vehicle + your time would likely be a solid contribution.

I think we could probably get away with 2 helmets and 2 fire suits if we absolutely had too... one for the current driver, and one for the guy who is up next.

As long as the stock tank doesn't leak, I say fuck it, let's run that. Unless we find a pinto or something.

Depends on the difference in sizes, though I think some people would want their own helmets on their own they would use for auto-x and other things too...

We also have to think of food, housing, possibly a communication setup of some sort (Helmet radios would be choice, but could be costly).

Wheels and tires- find some half burned up "performance" tires from some joker in a Honda, and add them to the pile. Chances are we just want to run steelies, as we can probably get 2-3 sets if we do it right. There is ALSO this dirt cheap place over in bloomington that sells tires that are mismatches from new cars and stuff for next to nothing. I'll look into what that guy keeps around. We could also start sniffing around the local autocrosses and see what they have for tires. They will not let us run slicks or R-compunds, so really, damn near anything will do. Lemons HAS been won in a Geo Metro before, so consistency and reliability are proven weapons. Plus it'd be no fun to spend a wad on a sketchy rocket only to have it grenade before tech.

Other things we need to think of... tools, jacks, jackstands, basic wrenching supplies. Probably do us good to keep a case of oil and some tranny fluid around too. Also, I think Matt mentioned it, but we probably want a manual. Clutch going is not nearly as detrimental as torque converter going. Plus, well, manuals are more fun.

If people can post up good deals on the equipment we are going to need (outside of the car) that'd be great, assuming we cannot find sponsorship for such Items.

3 layer fire suits can be had for $280 from Jegs, if someone finds a better deal let me know. I'd reccomend the 3 layer as then you dont have to deal with having fire resistant long johns also.

Can get an approved fire extinguisher for $60 or so from Jegs, need mounts also then.

Gloves will run $40 or so

James mentioned kits that have jacket/pants/gloves/shoes for ~310 or so, I found a couple but they are 1 layer so they would require longjohns also, not sure how much those run but might be an option.

This looks like a 1 piece SFI-5 / 3 layer for ~$260

Dan mentioned buying 2 suits and sharing them between people, everyone just having their own long johns. Only issue with this is, who gets the suits when we are done?

Helmets too. I think we should start getting a head count of who wants in on this, and take it from there, divvy up the finding of the stuffs.

We should consider trying to get some sponsorship for this too. For the stuff that doesn't count against the value of the car. Safety equipment, maybe some cash for food/lodging/gas, etc.

Maybe MAP could fab up a rollcage and a mount for the fire extinguisher and get us a line on some discounted fire gear. We could easily slap all kinds of stupid stickers and logos on the car.

Well here's what I'm thinking. Lets get a list together of the gear we need, prices, etc. Figure out who is actually in on this, then at that point we can decide would we be able/willing to do this on our own, and/or how much sponsorship dollars would we need.

I love the idea of a cage from MAP. They could do that fairly easily, would save us a chunk of dough and they could have a logo on the car. The safety stuff is far and away going to be our best bet for sponsorship.

The trip to race wouldn't be all that bad, gas in 2-3 vehicles, and splitting a big place to stay or a couple hotel rooms for a couple nights wouldn't be all that bad.
