I'm sure you know this, but just in case... there are a couple clauses in the rules to prevent cheating.

The first is this:
1.4: Claiming Race: At the end of the competition, the organizer--and nobody else, you lazy, better-car-wantin' bastids--may elect to purchase any vehicle from its owner(s) for $500. In other words, don't spend a lot on a cheater, cause if you do, you ain't gonna own it much longer.
The second is this:
1.6: Your Car May Be Destroyed at Any Time: In addition to accidents and other unfortunate boo-boos, one car may be selected by blind ballot of all teams for immediate removal and total destruction. It could be your car. It probably WILL BE your car. You'll have 30 minutes to yank out any safety items you want to rescue, and then it's toast. Them's the breaks. Don't bring it if you ain't OK with losing it.

Like Andy said not every car gets in, so it has to be well done, a rare vehicle, have some sort of crazy theme, etc.

The other thing is, if we want to be competitive from a race standpoint we need to look at cars that are light and handle pretty well, otherwise we can try and just get points for originality / crazyness and hope that offsets slowness.

If someone can find a sub-$500 b6t or even a b8 for the festiva, I could maybe be convinced to donate the car. Problem is, I paid $400 for it, so I dinno if there's a statute of limitations on the car purchase?

I'M OFFENDED!
Well, that is IF you continue to own it. We could easily shell game the car and have you "sell" it for 50$, let someone sit on it, and then it's on. OR- sell it to someone for 50$, have them sell it to me, or someone else on the team for 50$, and it's also on. We could avoid a lot of hassle by having the title "dissappear" for the duration of this transaction, forcing bills of sale. Granted, if we actually want to DRIVE the thing anywhere, the title's going to have to show up at one point or another. As far as b6-b8 I guarantee you right now we can find a b8 for 200$. There's a bajillion out there, and they put them in everything. I think that might be the way to go, because blowing up a rare, turbo, ancient motor would be a pita. I do like the b8 idea though.

If it was a different car, I might see people calling shenanigans on the shell game... but a festiva that needed a new motor would probably fly under the radar.

It's a festiva, and it needs a new motor. I think we'd get away with it, especially if it changed colors.
